If Lindsey Vonn is going to win a second gold medal at the Winter Olympics, it will have to wait. The world's top skier fell and was disqualified Thursday during the slalom portion of the women's super combined event at Whistler. She had been leading after the downhill run earlier in the day, but a tough opening section of the slalom appeared to have her headed toward a silver medal before the fall. Germany's Maria Riesch, Vonn's best friend and longtime rival, had put the pressure on one run earlier with a blazing time; the world's No. 2 ranked skier was the eventual winner of the event.

Julia Mancuso of the United States won silver, her second of the Games. She is now the most decorated female skier in Olympic history.

Vonn led by 0.33 seconds after the downhill, but she had lost most of that lead before the first split of the slalom. By the second split she was 0.18 behind. Seemingly aware that the gold was slipping away, Vonn pushed it a little too hard, taking each gate with less caution. She was skiing for gold, not silver.

The gamble didn't pay off.

Near the bottom of the course, Vonn clipped a gate, caught her right ski on the ground, and fell forward. She was immediately disqualified for failing to pass through the markers.

Only Vonn knows how much her shin was affecting her today, but blaming that injury for the fall would be a cop-out. It was good enough to hold up for a gold medal downhill run on Wednesday and another top time in the downhill today. And if she had skied a less aggressive race, the shin would have been healthy enough to win a silver medal.

That's not meant to be a criticism of Vonn's strategy though. She's the best in the world precisely because she takes those kinds of risks.

It's a disappointing end to an event she'd led, but it's not the end of the Olympic road for Vonn. She skis three more times and is the prohibitive favorite in Saturday's super-G.

The stinker is that if they do win (and I checked it's Canada 4, Germany 1 at intermission) they will probably face Russia in the Quarterfinals. I was hoping for a Canada vs Russia for the gold medal.

Edit: 1:10 into the 3rd period, Canada 5, Germany 1 Cool

US mens hockey team in the gold medal game by thrashing Finland 6-1. Will Canada be there too?

Time for a little payback beating the home team for the gold!

...dominating?...you kidding? Canada got the short end of that stick. Canada hit first, but Russia hit back, and hard. I see Staal still on the roster, but I doubt he walked away from that hit fine and dandy... (...and that was a clean hit too, unnecessary, but clean)

...and Crosby nearly got turned into a vegetable. Aye, that one was dirty, but you don't rough up Russia and not expect something like that...

...and lets not forget it was 2-1 Russia after the goalie switch, so don't forget send thank you cards to Nabokov.

Slovakia is the Cinderella team this year, and they won't be giving in easily. They beat Russia, and eliminated Sweden, so I wouldn't count my chickens just yet.

Canada stepped off the gas after 5 goals. You could clearly see by how they reduced the physicality. And it was give as good as they got. Crosby taking ovechkin out for instance. It was normal, NHL style play that the refs allowed,  Russia couldn't get into any sort of form until the Canadians eased off the hits.
Simple fact is, Canada finally found form, finally got it together and showed just how good they are. Russia got shown up. They are supposed to be the number one team in the world. They got beaten by a hugely inferior team, and struggled to beat the Czech's.
If 7-3 isn't dominant, I dont what is Wink

7-3 is not a very impressive distribution of points...

...to be honest, judging by how lazy and uncooperative the Russian forwards were, I don't think the deserved to have scored.

No doubt Canada has the most impressive offensive game in this Olympics, but that didn't do you any good against Team USA, and even the Swiss gave you guys quite a scare.

Albeit that Luongo pulled his game together, but its the little mistakes that has been costing Canada wins. The Slovakian goalie has been decent, and unless something drastic changes, I doubt Canada will get more than 5 in tonight, so Luongo has to step it up again or it might get real close.

...and once again, if Canada plays physical, the Slovakian won't hesitate to hit back. I don't think they'll win, but they have the potential (and they're just vindictive enough) to send a few Canadian players onto the injured reserved list...

...but either way, Canada has one more after tonight, facing either a fresh US team, with the best goalie in Vancouver or a humiliated Finnish team that won't be as sloppy as they were today. Tonight's game can easily determine the color of Canada's medal...if one at all.

I just received notification on my Blackberry that the Olympic Committee is revoking American downhill skier Lindsey Vonn's gold medal.

The press quote, "Olympic Committee's decision to give the Gold Medal to Barack Obama is justified because Obama is going downhill much faster."

Are you on glue???  They have already played half a season of physical NHL hockey.... I don't think the last 6 games in the Olympics have made them any more sore than they already were.  They're hockey players.... they can take hits.

I'm hoping Canada takes it. They got Luongo in net who's been pretty solid so far since taking over for Broduer... that idiot. Both the German game and the Russian game were dominating from a score stand-point. Not too sure what doesn't look dominating from a 7-3 win, but when you also consider the fact that Canada hasn't beaten the Russians in something stupid like 50 years at the Olympic level... I think that's a pretty dominating score. I mean, all three goals were short handed, and they had opportunities for more short handed goals, but that's all they could work was short handed stuff. Canada got a little sloppy against the Slovaks and they started to come back, they played the Slovaks like they played the US the first time, the only difference is the American goalie is a lot better than the Slovak goalie. I don't think it'll be a dominating performance by either team, but I'm hoping Canada prevails, they certainly have the ability to do so. Also, everyone keeps going on about the US having the most medals... Canada has the most golds... we're the best at the most disciplines.
