Good question.  When I saw 'Flight Gear' get it's own category, I thought aha!  Obviously still classified as simply 'payware'  Smiley

Since it appears MSFS is becoming a deadend, I'm seriously thinking about a purchase but need some informed opinions before parting with the cash.

The FIRST think an MS Flightsimmer needs to get through his head is that X-plane is NOT MSFS.  Unfortunately, it's "close enough" that you can easily get confused, and then the '"buts".

As long as you approach it as a completely new experience, great.

It's not "better" than MSFS, and MSFS is not "better" than X-Plane.

If you're looking for MSFS FS-X eye candy, it's still in the FS2002. just about getting to FS2004 stage.  (my almost uninformed opinion)

Horses of a different color, so to speak.  The more I read the less interested I become.  A concensus seems to say that it's more a computer engineers' toy, where visual effects have relatively little priority in the overall concept.  The importance they're giving to the "FAA certification" indicates it's more specifically meant as an intrument training device.

It's also one of your only choices if you don't use Windows (like those people really exist  Roll Eyes Cheesy)

It also features: vertical textures, sloped runways, bird strikes, and continuous updates & support.
It's not as nice now as FSX is, and some say not as nice as FS9 or even FS8.

However, I ran a contest in the studioV called 'Pick It', where an Xplane9 user took a shot, and I recreated the shot in FSX, and then had the users try to tell which was which....

They were wrong 1/2 times.  And these were 'veterans' of MSFS. So eye candy isn't an issue.

What kills Xplane for MSFS people I think, is the lack of AI, and the difficulty of learning a new flight sim. Wink The User Interface on Xplane is supposed to be rather nerve shattering the first few times.

If you drove a Chevy for your entire life, it would be like switching to a Ford.

I agree with Shane 100%...I do think there is room for improvement as far as AI, adding aircraft buildings, updated ATC....as far as eye candy I think the main issue with X-Plane is the lack of third part support.  The X-Plane development team is small compared to MSFS and they need more third part support to help bring the sim up to FSX or FS9 level.

Personally Im gonna live without those few things and continue to enjoy this fantastic sim for awhile. I do think XP is a bit more user friendly for us cockpit builders Wink

I've done both and just programming the joystick in X-Plane is enough to make you want to put your fist through your screen...
