I've never had a problem with an install on any Wiindows 95 through XP OS computers and the report is that it installs with Vista. I have had some problems in XP OS with some add-on features where I had to click into properties to run the program for 95 or 98.

I've been a FS & CSF fan forever (FS 1.0 in floppies anyone?) from a PC-XA to:
XPS 730 IntelCore2 Extreme processor QX9650 (3.00GHz Overclocked to 3.67GHz) w/QuadCore Technology and 12MB Cache
4GB Corsair Dominator DDR3 SDRAM 1333MHz overclocked to 1600MHz – 4 DIMMs
Dual Cards Dual 1024MB Radeon ATI HD 3970X2
2 WD, 160GB 10K with NCQ and 16MB DataBurst Cache (apps on 2nd drive)
Dell High Color 30 inch UltraSharp Widescreen Digital Flat Panel (2590x1600)
FF2 stick, CH pedals
Games:  FSX w/Accelerator, CFS, CFS 2

FSX went up easily on the new box.  Both CSF and CSF 2 "Installed".  CSF is my favorite.  I set the properties to "Run as XP" etc.  When the game starts, the splash screen comes up all fractured, I get the music theme.  If I guess correctly where the hotspots are on the screen, I get to the mission screen and the can start a mission.   I managed once, after importing the CFG file from the old XP box and changing the display to the new decriptor, to actually fly the first mission (looked great!!!).  Then it went into the potty and has stayed there!

Can we get a thread going with Vista experiences and maybe sort out what's going wrong?  Anybody have an in at Microsoft?

Folks,

There has to be a way!  As I said, I have gotten one attempt to properly display the screens leading up to and including the first mission.  However, after the first mission I couldn't get it to work right.  The initial splash screen shows up as splatters.  However, the hot spots seem to be in the right place and work -if you can guess where they are!  The second and subsequent screens then work.  But the mission comes up with the background fractalized with wierd colors as if both cards are sending images to the LCD - the cockpit & controls work correctly.  I noticed one thread somewhere mentioned that maybe a multithread (multicore..) activity kicks in and is unsynchronized, 'cause it wasn't meant to be??  Another possibility is the dual cards (in my case).  There are folks who shold know.  Unfortunately, Microsoft sees this product as a game that's been eclipsed by their newer offerings and don't understand.  CSF2 Is neat, but the missions take longer and are longer and require more concentration.  CSF is THE fun game to give your reflexes a quick checK!  And CSF3....

Don't expect usoft to understand -- they may think they'll force more sales of new product by making the old ones defunct. At least XP allows a "Run as" Windows 95; I take it Vista does not?
What screen properties are you set at? Mine is set on 32 bit (1024 x 768} with my XP.

H,

I have the screen set to 2590x1600 with 32 bit color, nearly all graphic options maxed.  As I said, the one time I got into the game it preformed as it's supposed to so I don't think it's the old problem of overloading the graphics engine.  And on 30 inches of real estate is was an eye full.  I can't image why the spash sheet with the intial options is fragged, 'cause by ESCping or finding the "Campaigns" hotspot on the screen amonst the tattered refuse I can get to the pilot selection and mission description screens and they are OK.  All the selections work then and I can hit <ctl><O> and use the menu bar to change settings, etc.  I've never had problems with the FF2 or CH pedals just like they're used in FSX.  I also wonder if there's any antisymbyism between FSX and CFSes over Vista/graphics card internal settings.  Like maybe Vista opening threads that step on each other?.  It could be something like the multiprocessor support.

I don't infer nasty objectives into MS's actions about products.  They're in it for money and they gravitate towards most of the customers - who aren't concerned with flight dynamics, just the visceral experience..   And the CFSes don't have autopilots/flight management systems (well, CSF3 probably does..).

The reason I questioned the resolution is because CFS1 was set to run on 256 colors within its programming. After I've modified the dialog.dll (in which the splash screens are located), when I run the program there's often color distortion or wrong colors in the replacement pxs and the buttons are messed up or only partially visible.

Not fired it up for a long time but I've always run CFS1 in 16 bit colour resolution. Never had a problem with it in any version of Windows since Win95. I have no knowledge of Vista but I believe it has similar Compatbility Mode options to those in WinXP. http://reviews.cnet.com/vista/9602-13259_7-0.html?messageID=2509361&kw=vista

That is to say, cardinalbrian, that CFS1 was already being compiled before Windows 98 was; it's definitely older than XP (or ME2k).

H,

I decided to buldoze my way through this.  Unfortunately I didn't take screen shots of the movie(which I should have turned off) or the splash screen.  BUT!  Guessing for the hotspots on the Initial screen and clicking whenever the arrow cursor appeared caused a change in screens, I think to the pilot selection screen.  Repeating the guess approach I got a clean screen of the mission briefing - a kinda random selection (got screen shot).  When I clicked the "Fly Now" I got a good "start of mission" screen.  Foolishly I went to the menu bar and clicked full screen.  Then I got the fractured, magenta colored background - but good foreground & cockpit of the FW-190 (got screen shot).  If I can figure out how to get the jpgs in this post you'll see them.  Ungefahrlich I can't get the images in the post, maybe you can explain how to do that.

H & Hagar,

I've used CSF since it came out.  On 98, ME, XP, and this attempt on Vista.  Since I've moved all my toys (I gave up on the PFI or whatever console, but all the bits did work when I felt like controlling prop, mixture, etc) to the Vista machine and all the powerful graphics .  Like I said, the big tease was that one time I actually did the first Brit mission on the 30 inch 2590x1600 x 32 LCD!  So I KNOW the machine and CSF can communicate.

Have you tried running it using DOSBox? I'm not sure if there is a Vista version yet but it could be worth a look. I used that to enable some of my older games in XP Wink

H & Ozzy72,

I dunno what the product Ozzy72 refer to is.  But I've never needed add-ons before, and, as I said, I've seen my configuation (HW, Apps, cfg files, etc) run a CSF mission.  So, I'm sure none are needed.  One thing I've gotta check on is whether it ran BEFORE I set the display from the old Radeon 9700 to the HD 3870X2.

H, OK, I see the URL stuck between delimiters.  Can I put a url for my own site there?  If so, I'll put the images out there and make like an HTML reference to 'em.   Apparently a filename on my box won't do, it's clearly gotta be web accessible.  Is there a Simviation cache available to splat stuff into?

H & Ozzy72,

OK, I stumbled into the screenshot instructions.  The two shots I have are 256k & 423k, individually and combined both exceed the rules' limitations.  I don't think I can get any further compression on a shot that started at 2560x1600.  Question is, what's to look at if I extract a "representative swath" from the full screen shots?  Particularly the Mission Briefing at default size (same physical size as it appeared on my 20" P4) looks SO lonely on the big screen!

BTW, both:  nice pics!

H& Ozzy72,

Today's experimentation: I made the following cfg changes:
ShowLogo=1                  ShowLogo=0
FULL_640=1                  FULL_640=0
(added)                        LIMIT_RESOLUTIONS = 0
Device= ATI Radeon HD 3870X2.0    >> ATI Radeon 9700 Pro 2k/XP

I lost the controls, get a message that resources weren't available, reload SW 4.0.

At one point the intro screens came up properly at default size and worked.  Then the mission (Brit 2) came up at full screen looking good, but I had no controls.  The AI aircraft took off and left me but I got a screen shot (426KB).  The next try had fractured screens and the fractured mission.  But after hitting <ESC> to no apparent response, when I pulled up the Task Manager to kill CSF the full screen image popped up looking good (I was in a Training Mission w/P51) and I had a message "End Flight?".  When I said "No" the image stayed.  Then I turned into the fractured mission again.

This is very teasy.  A good full screen image can get rendered with dynamics and color.  Seperately I've had the controls.  All the pieces are there!

BTW, can anybody provide a description of what the following do?  Is there a complete description of cgf parameters anywhere?
FULL_SCREEN=2?? What are useful values??
PERFORMANCE_MODE=0
DEF_PERF_MODE=6
IMAGE_QUALITY=0
FLIGHT_MODEL=2

The .cfg file should be fairly self-rendered but, since you're meddling with it...

FLIGHT_MODEL=0

* Why add LIMIT_RESOLUTIONS, especially if you're not enabling it? I don't have it, which is equivelent to a "0" command. *

* What is this confusing line:

ATI Radeon HD 3870X2.0    >> ATI Radeon 9700 Pro 2k/XP
?
              I'm very leary of a "/" in a command line. i.e. what's in your XP file? *

              In my case:
                   [HARDWARE]
                   Device=NVIDIA GeForce 6150 LE
                   Mode=640x480x16

                   [PANELS]
                   IMAGE_QUALITY=1

                   [PREFS]
                   FULL_SCREEN=2
*

FULL_640=1
*

PERFORMANCE_MODE=6
                   DEF_PERF_MODE=6
                   IMAGE_QUALITY=0
                   IMAGE_SMOOTHING=1
                   LOW_RES_RENDERING=0

                   [SETTINGS]
                   joystick=1
                   ForceFeedJoystick=11

                   [CONTROLS]
                   LastJoystickName=Gravis Black Hawk
                   force_master_gain=10000
                   force_master_enabled=1
                   force_stick_force_enabled=1
                   force_stick_shaker_enabled=1
                   force_gear_bump_enabled=1
                   force_crash_enabled=1
                   force_ground_bumps_enabled=1
                   force_machinegun_enabled=1
                   force_bulletdamage_enabled=1
                   force_rocket_enabled=1
                   force_bomb_enabled=1
                   force_flak_enabled=5130
                   PAN_RATE=400

*
This should render the full screen usage, no tool bars unless you click the Alt key.

H,

Thanks for the list of cfg values.

In the Readme file it said if one used a mode other than those listed to add "LIMIT_RESOLUTIONS=0".  The "ATI Radeon 9700 Pro 2k/XP" is listed just like that in (and the only 9700 pro) one of the display cfg files.  I just thought I'd try it.  I was poking around for something between the STB card that worked on the old box, which actually had the Radeon 9700, and the 3870s.  The mystery is the switching around between rendering methods while switching program states.  I thought I got a distinct improvement after I took the .cfg file off my old box compared to the installation configuration.  I'm gonna look through my controls options & see if anything weird appears there before I re-install SW 4.0.  Another anomaly is not being able to exit the program without activating the Task Manager, which somehow magically summons the "End CSF" screen.  If this happen on one of my Unisys 1100s I'd look for an improperly initialized activity (thread).

I already suggested that. Has to be worth a try. Seems a lot easier than messing around tweaking CFG files. http://reviews.cnet.com/vistaa/9602-13259_7-0.html?messageID=2509361&kw=vista

This was suggested at the start. He's claimed that his Vista OS won't offer compatibility prior to XP (he should at least have compatibility for Windows 98 -- even XP goes back to Windows 95).

Guys,

I set the program to XP Compatability at the beginning.  I'll recheck that setting.  I moved my stick, etc off an XP box where FS2004, FSX, CSF, CSF2, and even CSF3 have been running well for years (well, not FSX, but since it came out).  I still haven't taken CSF & CSF2 off this box, but they're not gonna run here anymore..

I'll get back to fiddling with CSF next week, I've gotta catch up on approaches in FSX.

Guys,

Another afterthought.  I'm gonna put the screen shots up on my web site (http://mysite.verizon.net/vzeu858f/) ; to show what I see.  They're too big ~540KB for the forum.

The point was that you don't want to choose compatibility with Vista or XP; preferably Windows 95 or Windows 98 compatibility at the latest. This should be applicable by a pop-up window when right-clicking on the CFS start/exe icon.

Guys,

Some things seep in slowly.  I changed the Compatability to Win98 and adopted the applicable cfg settings H provided.  Then:

Switched Device back  to : ATI Radeon HD3870 X2.0  Also  fixed the FF stick name!  Fixed Rudder nulls

Result:  Fractured initial screen.  When I hit CTRL ALT DEL  to bring up the Task Manager the screen repainted at 640x480 Full Screen correctly.  I terminated the Task Manager.  Next screens similar, all hot spots worked.  The mission screen came up fractured (like the FW shot on my site) and the keyboard worked.  After engine start I lost control of the Hurricane so I hit CTRL ALT DEL  again.  Screen repainted to correct colors, background and high resolution.  Apparently there a significant difference in the graphics rendering for the selection screens (uses Windows objects?) and the simulation engine.  Snapping out of the program to  go to the Task Manager forces the repaint which is done correctly – and these new settings are carried onto the other selection screens.  ALSO!  When I took a screen shot of the fractured screens, the image I pasted off the clipboard appeared normal when I pasted it into Paint!

The fact that I'm getting a visually different screen captured by Print Screen than what I see on the screen is intriguing!  I can't get an image of the fractured stuff to put on my site for you to look at!

Also the need to go to Task Manager to terminate the progam seems to me to be a thread conflict.

But Darn!  It seems very teasy!

It raises doubts that it's a direct problem with CFS. Not all systems are compatible with all video screen settings. For instance, there are some settings my monitor won't properly display; the graphics card was inherent with the motherboard but my LCD monitor is a previously used add-on. I believe one of the most common settings with my old Windows98 was 800x600x16 although I remember also using 1024x768x16; currently my XP computer is set at 1024x768x32 and I've had no graphics problems with CFS so far.
It seems you have something set wrong outside of CFS but I'm not an expert... I don't know your system. One other thing you may wish to do, however, is to remove your current Combatfs.cfg (shove it into a cache folder or such) and then start CFS; it should generate a new Combatfs.cfg for itself.

H,

I agree entirely.  While there are some problems that seem to be related to CSF (reconfiguring the joystick settings) I think the problems I see (fractured images, inability to Exit, locked in minimized) seem to be a miscommunication between CSF & VISTA and VISTA & graphics.  Clearly the joystick problem is avoidable, but I find it strange that CSF loses contact with it and FSX is unaffected - indicates (to me) that it's not a joystick problem.  The inability to Exit and locked in minimized don't affect the actual game performance, so I can live with them.  Now I've found I can bounce the fractured screens by just bringing up the Task Manager and closing it.

I'll admit the screen resolution may be a problem, but I've been playing CSF at 1600x1200 with most features maxed since the beginning - but I don't do multiplayer.  Even here, After a bounce I seem to have 2560x1600 - at least 1600x1200 anyway, so it seems if you find the right (re)entry point into CSF the graphics engine can render whatever CSF hands to it.

Just a stray thought;  I wonder if the half blank background on my mission screens is a result of the daul-card Crossfire (?) feature.

I'm afraid only an MS guy that worked on CSF AND keeps up with video card & support changes can answer these questions..

This brings up a point: I have an install of CFS on the basic hard drive of my current in-use computer; on a second hard drive which came out of the previous computer I have a number of installs, some with the .exe renamed (such as WW1.exe, in which are my planes and missions written for World War I, and another with a Korea.exe). I haven't tried the Korean arena CFS but the WW1 seems to start up fine. The CFS (original format, stock acft still included) on the basic hard drive does not initiate properly with the joystick (run through a USB converter). The moment I apply full throttle the acft will spin like a top; a "Joystick has been changed from..." message is displayed as soon as I click into settings. Rather than recalibrating the joystick settings every time I start my first mission in that version, I apply throttle and immediately tap the Alt key, click "End Flight" from the drop-down and restart the mission; it works fine for as long as the program is running thereafter.
Somehow or another, the the joystck directive is being rewritten and I've never been motivated enough to try to correct it since it hasn't been that much of a problem (it's corrected by simply engaging the joystick throttle control and restarting the mission). However, this is a seperate issue from your graphics problem; my graphics are not affected (nor defected).

H,

I'm a bit encouraged (and perhaps further perplexed) that someone else (particularly a well-versed someone) has encountered problems that admit to solutions similar to those I've stumbled into!  We may find a ourselves on the yellow brick road yet!

These are almost as bad as the alternator problems I having with 851!!!

Folks,

I uninstalled the Sidewinder 4.0 and CSF programs and reinstalled them.  Apparently the uninstall left the .cfg in place (?).  It appears that starting the Task Manager clears the fratured screens.  The initial screen comes up bonkers, and when the TM comes up it repaints to normal 640x480, full screen.  The pilot selection and misson description screens then appear normal 640x480, full screen.  The mission came up in a small window.  Everything worked, but in miniture.  So I ended the mission after shooting down a few JU87s & crashing into a BF109 I exploded and used the menu bar to select Full Screen the next time.  Not good, back to half and half background and strange controls.  The FFB2 and pedals seemed to work, but in slow motion and crash mode.

Compatibility was set to XP w/SP2, which it ran very well under.  Note that the CSF install screens advertize compatibility with Win98 aircraft, so the Win98/Me  should be all the further retro you should need to go.

I'm gonna try to use an old single card video descriptor either the STB whatever or the Radeon 9700 worked before for 1600x1200x32.

Also, is there a way to tell Vista to not use threading?

Also!  When I tried to check the FFB2 after the Sidewinder 4.0 install, the Properties button leads to nowhere..

I got a message that part of the software was missing or not compatable.  So I found the SW start command and went to the properties page.  The Compatibility tab was grayed out.  In response to something I did I got a dialog box that said "You're trying to mess with something that's part of Windows"!!

Why does CSF and the SW 4.0 say the FFB2 software is messed up when the stick works perfectly fine in FSX?  Is there another handler in the HID locker of VISTA??

One other thing you may wish to do, however, is to remove your current Combatfs.cfg (shove it into a cache folder or such) and then start CFS; it should generate a new Combatfs.cfg for itself.
You did understand that this required no uninstall nor a reinstall of CFS? Just as the program will generate a .cdp from an aircraft .dp, it will do the same for the combatfs.cfg (or according to whatever you've renamed the combatfs.exe).
You haven't been reinstalling the program every time you've added an aircraft, have you? Neither do so for a new program .cfg (however, please don't do this with an aircraft.cfg -- the aircraft won't be there -- but only with the main program combatfs.cfg, usually located just above the combatfs.exe).

Cool

H,

I think I did the reinstall just to clear my head..

I just changed the Device to Radeon 9700 Pro.  That's what it ran under before  (at 1920x1200 or 1600x1200 depending on which monitor I had attached).  Similar results. But I could play the game weirdly.  Same startup with fractured initial screen.  Started Task Manger and screen repainted correctly at 640x480. Exited TM.  Selected "Campaigns", pilot selection screen came up 640x480.  Selected me.  Mission Description screen came up 640x480,  clicked "Fly Now" or equivalent.  Funny Mission screen came up.  All controls seemed to work, but with a built in multisecond delay.  Actually took off, retracted gear, caught up with Crittenden and whoever, and "X"ed to the action.  Then I got tired of the charade (the alternative would've been to be cooked by a 109!) and did the Task Manager thing again which killed the game.  Strange.  On the right side background, it looks well rendered except the only color is an orangish.  Most detail appears.  Even the "Radar" displays correctly.  On the left side background it's black except for the traffic tags, which don't get cleaned up so the half fills up with names of the flightmates!  I got a screenshot after the "X" if anybodys interested.  It's 540K or so, beyond limits, so I'll put it on my site.    I'm gonna try to get the small screen back where the rendering is correct and work towards making it full screen..

H,

Oh!  BTW:  After the reinstall the Device was the new dual card - which annoyed me because I didn't check the folder before reinstalling to make sure the old CFG (and no, I don't reinstall after each CFG mod) wasn't there.  After this I'll go back one more and try the STB
card descriptor.  That worked on my old p2 with a 1600x1200 CRT.

I'm still wondering if there isn't an alternative FFB2 controller that FSX has access to???  I don't understand why CSF should get confused at the SSW 4.0 interface - they're cohorts in obsolesence.

I hope I don't have this much fun when I have time to put CSF2 on the new box!!

I should be wasting this time doing approaches in FSX!  The Cardinal RG from Philip Taylor's list looks and flies just like mine..

Success!

After changing the Radeon 9700 Pro's Mode to 1920x1200x32 The mission screens come up correctly and the missions perform as expected.  Surprise!!!  I have toe brakes!!!  But they seem to be a lot grabbier than the button brakes.  With the Hurc almost stopped I applied them to line up with 'ol Critty in the grass and nosed under!!!

Now the only problem is bringing up the Task Manager in the beginning to force that first repaint.  From then on the game works as you'd expect.  With the addition of toe brakes!

I guess that ends this thread!!!

Thanks to everybody that encouraged me..
