I was wondering if I could suggest us having an annual moderator election? Anybody who has been on the forum over a year can be nominated, and we have stages of voting until it is down to 5 or 6 members. The mods would have full power to deny anyone from the election though, as in if they do not trust a certain member who has been voted for, they can be taken off the ballet. It would go to a poll, and then the member with the most votes would become the next moderator. Obviously there might not be a need for more moderators, and no body would be forced into becoming a moderator if they do not want the responsibility. Please do not think I'm trying to BS my way into becoming a mod, because I wouldn't qualify. I just had this idea and wanted to suggest it.

To be honest, I think we already have a superb team of mods, who are fair and just, and the number of them is about right....do we really need any more???

Nothing for nothing, but pete, the owner of this site, decides when and if we need another moderator.
And if we do, it is up to him for the final say.

It is not up to the members to decide who should be a Mod for obvious reasons as you have stated above.
Do you think you should have that privilege or something?

There are many variables that go into deciding who should be a Mod , when we feel the need for one!
For one, time zones are taken into consideration, is there a mod on 24/7?
How this site elects its moderators is not up to the users of this site.

Do you want to know how it is done.
If we think we need another Mod, we talk about it in the admin forum.
We throw around some names.
We discuss if those people are right for the job.
Are they a positive influence on this community?
Does that person try to diffuse aggressive situations?
Does that person know how to remain "neutral" in different situations?
Does that person come across as a mature individual that knows how to represent Pete's business?
Does that person have knowledge of flight Sims and flight in general?
Should this person be a Global or admin position?

Then and only then if pete and all of us agree, is the person contacted by pete and asked.
You would be amazed how many people have refused the offer.
Being a Mod is not the most rewarding thing.

You know the whole Bjorn - Nick thread?
Do you want that responsibility?
Do you want to see how it feels to lose a valued member of this site because the member thinks that the administration of this site did not handle things correctly?
Believe me, it is not rewarding!

I would say sit back, enjoy the forums and post responsibly.
Who knows...
Maybe one day pete will ask you  Wink

Now let me get to the dozen PM's I recieved this weekend over the entire Nick leaving episode as I was truly upset by the entire thing.

i think a moderator should be someone who has earnt the right in the admins/other mods eyes... i dont think its very fair or reliable to get a position as high as a moderator from being a year old user or 'winning' the position.

Nick, what advantages could an election possibly possess? I think if anything, mods in different time zones should be the thing to push for, so we are moderated basically, 24/7.

So you do not support democracy just an observation. The PM or President of the UK and USA is voted in for a reason as teh people want them in for a reason same applys everywhere.

Who said anything about democracy? This is a private forum & the owner makes the rules. That is his right.

And if Mods were voted in, you'd have far too many personal interests involved and friends voting in friends regardless of how mature they are or how well they would ever be able to do the job.

Maybe the annual

SimViation Member's Member of the Year Awards

(The SimVs)

would be more appropriate. Then we could have egos massaged at no practical cost to the forum...

Awards could include:

"Member's Member of the Year"
"Young Member of the Year (under 17s)"
"Lifetime Achievement Award (for the more "mature" posters, as opposed to an "Old Member of the Year" Wink)"
"PITA of the Year"
"Poster of the Year"
"Best Thread of the Year"
"Most Pointless Poll of the Year"

finally,

"Most Ridiculous Suggestion of the Year"

This is post my entry. Tongue Wink Cheesy Grin

Ok how are the Uk and USA not democracies. You will find we have the freedom of speech, to vote, too own a gun(america only), and many other things you all take for granted as you live in a democracy you feel is not very democratic.

Felix and myself are from Florida...  Wink

IMO, being a mod is about maturity.  Not maturity as in you never screw around, but as in being able to do little things like take responsibility for your actions, and admit when you're wrong.  I hate it when I have to move a thread or suggest to a member that his behavior is in appropriate somehow, but I do it anyway.  I do like to look beyond a person's one screwup and see a well-intentioned guy who wants to help but may not have thought out his response as well as he should.  If you're on a power trip and want to do this job just so you can ban people or lord it over others, then forget it, because you will suck at it.

Being a mod on this forum is one of the ways I give back to the FS world.  I've made a couple of sceneries, built a few airports, made one or two utilities, but that's not really much.  I am terrible at making airplanes.  If someone wants to work with me one on one, I might get it off the ground, but so far, I suck at it.  So I give where I can.  There are certainly people out there who know more about FS than I do.  But I have been around a LONG time and have figured out that it's not about how much you know; it's about how you treat people and your ability to work out problems on your own.

If you want the job, I think the best thing you can do is put your time in on the forums, earn your licks, and let Pete know about it and accept whatever decision he makes.

I'm an admin myself, but for Flight Sim Ground Vehicles. This is because I created that website and its forum; therefore, voting me for mod of SimViation's forum will just add to the burdon and I don't want that. Thankfully, FSGV's member population is just 40 and holding. When the numbers get higher and higher [and when spammers get more problematic], then I'll be making my own decisions as to who gets to be moderator. If Fly2e is right about how many people turn down the offer of being a mod [which I believe he is], then I'm gonna have to make sure I'm ready to handle the massive responsibility of dealing with rowdy members trying to disrupt my forum.

Fly2e is right when he says that being a mod is NOT a rewarding experience. Of course, you get to decided contest shots, access the admin forum, and lots of other stuff that only mods get to do; but all that power comes with responsibility and responsibility requires time effort. Like I said, my forum is pretty small for the time being, so I got plenty of breathing room.

Pete selects his mods with the greatest of care. Firstly he puts forward names, he also asks the mods to do the same. Then we whittle it down to a "select" few. Then we put pictures of those people on the dartboard and lob darts at them. The first person with their nose pierced is offered the job (and believe me with the amount of beer the mods can drink even hitting the dartboard is impressive) Wink Grin

Thanks, Doug, that's what I was aiming at.   A "democracy" where the citizens vote on ALL actions is unmanageable in other than VERY small groups.   If you don't have a "democracy" in a development's homeowners association, you can't expect it in a country!

Online forums/websites, etc., are benign dictatorships.   Members, (including non-owner admins and mods), have only such *privileges* as the site owner allows, and these may be revoked, for whatever reason, at any time.
