In your post, you said set the settings to maximum, meaning full detail and sliders to the right. That will not get you a good screenshot. If your PC cant handle 3D clouds, then take screenshots in a clear sky or with a very small amount of 2D clouds. Dont push your PC beyond its limits, you lose a large amount of quality by doing that

yeh, i used triliniarly flitering (it looked better in my opinion) and the AA doesnt look any better switched off than it is switched on (it was switched on for this shot)

Dont use FS AA, it isnt very helpful and it kills framerates. Use the AA in your graphic cards settings

So then live without AA, if it doesnt have settings that means you cant set it which means your computer cant handle it

This has to be the strangest way to take shots and fly!

I can't fathom doing all that!

I just fire up my sim, fly the plane and take the shots....

it takes about 5mins to load the cockpit and a further 2mins after that to load the guages and get them working whenever i play the game from full specs. and the FPS are rubbish, so for me, loading it low and switching to high settings is really helpful

BUT ITS NOT A GOOD TECHNIQUE! You still dont understand the point of everything Ive said, if you set it so that YOUR computer handles the best IT can you get the BEST screenshots from YOUR computer. Do I need to draw you a picture or something?

I absolutely agree with you. When I had a weak machine I used to fly with fairly low settings (not as low as in your pic though Roll Eyes

looks like FS 98!) and then crank them up to take a shot. Or, I flew with them high all the time 5 FPS. If I wanted to fly seriously I didn't take screenshots, and flew with everything turned down. See the first month of my screenshot gallery (my sig). Some of the first were taken with a GeForce 2 in FS2002 and they're not too bad...

Now, of course, after a lot of work and computer upgrades, I just get in and fly and things look pretty good, lucky old me, but for people stuck with a low-end comp I see nothing wrong with this technique at all. Like Jake says, you do need to avoid doing thing which over tax your computer, though. Experiment. Does the overall quality look worse with 3d clouds enabled, or can you get away with it. Etc.

My advice on your second pic - looks like maybe you over-did the mip-mapping. Set it to 4 and you might get better results. Also, change the visibility in weather manager to 20 or 30 miles. The horizon will be shrouded in mist and it should avoid the 'jagged horizon' effect you have. Other things you can try - buildings are prominent, the plane is small... so turn up scenery detail and lower plane detail. The pic would be better if the plane were bigger anyway, though. You could also try taking pictures with just sky, or just ground. Go in close on the plane and have a simple background. Use F1 view to make zooming and panning easier and get some cool angles. With plane addons with great sound/panel/VC, remove them for screenshots and just use default ones - they slow down the comp a lot. Turn off ground shadows and the plane shadow, unless you are doing a landing shot. Turn off ai unless you're doing an airport view where you want ai. Also, clear your desktop and switch off non-useful stuff in the task bar at bottom right on your screen. All these things eat performance. And defrag your hard drive, do spy and addware scans.

I'm not an expert, but I hope something from the above was helpful.

@ Krigl thankyou! atlast! someone who agrees with me! (well, a lil bit) and i promise you this is FS9 cos i just unistalled FS98 (and FS9 10mins ago)
and i will take that advice, when i reinstall FS9 on my new, higher powered PC

@ Jakemaster i know exactly what you mean, and i even said i know what you mean, for most things you should set it at the maximum... but like krigl pointed out some of the things are best set slightly lower. can i please ask you to provide advice on how to sort out a problem, instead of pointing out the problem
