Yes, I know I'm likely to be shot down for this, and that it's probably been posted a bazillion times before.

Is it possible to convert to a newer version of YaBB, or even convert another forum altogether, such as phpBB. I am assuming your server supports PHP Tongue. The benefits of phpBB are it is one of the most stable boards at a high work load, I know of one that can handle millions of users, up to 20,000 on at one time with hundreds of millions of post.

I have heard things such as there are too many posts/members to convert, the forums are to large and other such things from various people but was hoping for confirmation and a full explanation if any of these are true from Pete.

If it does help, I have been doing my homework into these ideas:

Converting to YaBB 2 -> http://www.yabbsupport.com/Upgrading_from_YaBB_1.x

Converting from YaBB to phpBB -> http://www.phpbb.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=4051&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlig...

Script to convert -> http://www.pocketmatrix.com/chris/YaBB2phpBB2-v1.2.1.zip

Have been tried before, even with the help of the creators of YaBB, and even they failed to succed..

Lets face it, it's "Mission Impossible!"

When there is a will, there's a way!! I'm quite sure there would be a way to convert this mess of a forum into something a lot more stream-lined, even if it is fully converted by hand....

Main problem, the damn profiles page!! I hate waiting for that crap to load, 3 hours later and it's still loading. Also when a few people start to get on the script starts to slow down. CGI scripts can't keep up with too many people on at once. There'll be performance improvements across the entire forum. YaBB leaves a lot to be desired. I work with phpBB and it leaves YaBB for dead.

Patience is a virtue and I don't see the problem. Only this morning I changed 6 profiles for having linked or over-sized avatars! You just need to do this when there aren't excessive numbers of people logged-in and not every five minutes. Why do you think my pics only change about every couple of years?

It will be done. The Yabb guys couldn't do it though so maybe a PHP conversion would be something to look at.

Sweet. PHP, I think, is the way to go. It is cleaner, smoother, faster and can handle huge loads. The only problem that I can think of is the upload script. Is it part of YaBB, or seperate?

The image upload script is separate & shouldn't be a problem with a new forum.

Is there any timeline in place yet, or still looking into things?

Hope you have a great break and return refreshed!

If not that I would like to see IPB (Invision Power Boards). But that cost's $$.

Definantly better than the...this looks like Pro Board software?

I always liked the option of searching all threads by users in IPB.

This current system is YaBB, a CGI-based system and, in my opinion, a very slow and wasteful one. I'm suggesting phpBB which is the most popular free PHP system. It has the search option you have specified as well as search by user and string. Many sites that charge for services use phpBB because it's free, extremely flexible, open source and very reliable. I'm a member of a free site with over 1 million users, 100 million posts and over 100 forums that uses this phpBB, which goes to prove its worth.

Sounds great, but do we really need thousands of mods? Roll Eyes.

thousands of mods? sure we need them, who doesnt need a Skype button... or a little thing to say whether people or online... or a karma thingy... or a...

you get the idea.

Basically, no, we probably wont ever need all the mods, but its nice to have the options.

phpBB3 does look a lot better from an admin perspective as well as a user perspective.
In all honesty, I think it might be beneficial to SimV if we just started a new forum from scratch using phpBB rather than messing around trying to convert it.
as well as the usual benefits gained by switching to phpBB, it would mean freeing up a huge amount of space on the servers by getting rid of the hundreds if not thousands of users who have been inactive.

But then you have the hassles of loosing posts, especially memorable ones, everyone loosing PMs they want to keep, setting up the forums again as well as making new stickies. A lot of the tutorials would be lost. The hassle of converting is worth it.

I use phpbb as well for (the dead?) FSGallery. it is quite flexible in customizing. Good stuff, i added a few things to personalize it. PHPbb is definetly worth looking at. and quite a few webhosts provide auto-install for a wealth of programs. anyone heard of Fantastico?

ive just installed phpbb3 on ym own computer and as Winged One and Akula said, it would be better to try and convert it if possible.
anything that i mentioned can be done from within phpBB anyway thanks to some new tools of theirs.

oh, and, one more plus for phpBB: open source. This means that if we for some reason dont like it for a lack of a feature, and there arnt any mods already out, then we can write our own (or find someone to do it for us, and with 20,000+ members, there's gotta be someone willing to do it...)

by the way, id be interested to know the database size for a phpBB-based SimV... im guessing around 50-100mb

I think it's safe to say things are starting to get moving now Grin
Just think, by Christmas we should (hopefully) have a new and improved SimV forum that will allow the increased expansion of this wonderful community!

There may be a little change between the styles, but I think the blue and white should be able to stay ^^

Admins - I would like to offer my help in setting up the style for the phpBB forums so it mirrors this style as much as possible.

Something just occured to me... I realised that I should check that phpBB had a rank system. Luckily it does!! I think it works a little differently, it still goes by number of posts and is self defined but the image is set by the admin. So we could have something a little different from the 5 stars and such. Maybe a different aircraft for each stage? For example working up from a Cessna (1 star) to a 747 (5 star)?

On the phpBB website there is a set of rank images with the rank stripes used on airlines
would be pretty suited tot he nature of the forums I think

also, like wingo, I don't mind helping with the switch-over if there is anything i can do. Would be nice to give something back to the V after using it so much. Just waiting until I turn 18 now so I can join Smiley

We've been over this before. I don't think we want the rating system. Besides, now that I'm over 10k, I don't really care either. 8)

LOL i understand ALL the benefits of upgrading, but i like the current one its more Relaxed and cosy for my liking, and is very easy to operate and understand. But thats just me. But if a new forum means better performance and quality i think its a good idea.
