I love the many planes available. Grin  I have downloaded 37 so far.  Trouble is only 25 of them work.  The other 12 crash the application with a "FLTSIM98 - Application error."  I am using FlightZip 2000 to unzip and install all of these planes.  I have checked out the MDLs with MDL Checker and they all pass.  I would really like to know what's up with the 12 crashers ???  If anyone could help, I would be happy to designate the planes, but I can't tell you from which page I downloaded them.

I don't know if this will fix your specific problem but I suggest you install the FS98 Patch & FS98 Converter if you haven't already done so. http://www.simviation.com/fs98utilities_ess.htm

You're welcome. If you did all that & checked the MDL files with the MDL Repair Utility I mentioned in your other topic I can only suggest you forget FlightZip 2000 & learn how to install the files manually.

If you tell me file names & where they're posted I can always check them out for you.

The thing I like about Flight Zip is that I can change panels and sounds so easily.  Some of the planes don't have sounds.  I was particularly interested in the Cessna 195 because I knew a man who took me for a flight in his.  I worked for a missionary aviation school and he kept his 195 in our hangar.  I will re-download the 195 and install it manually.

Thanks again for your interest and help!

I tried the Cessna 195 here. http://www.simviation.com/fs98props63.htm
Works fine for me. The panel & sound are aliased to defaults. I didn't try the separate panel.

Thanks Hagar!  Cheesy Because of your encouragement and suggestions, I successfully downloaded the 195 and now have it as my default out of KGRB 18.  I hate to sound picky, but the sound is not a real 195 sound, but an aliased 182.  Someone has said that there is no other sound like a 195 Shaky Jake.  I have even searched through all 593 FS98 sound files at another sim site with  no success.  Is there somewhere else besides here or flightsim.com that I could look?

A lot of FS98 web sites have shut down, however most of them were very specific sites dedicated to a special type of aircraft.

As far as I know flightsim.com has the most FS98 files. There are some files that are not on flightsim.com However, of it is not on flightsim.com the chances of finding it elsewhere are low.

My best idea is to look for sound from an airplane that has a similar engine.

I don't know how a 195 is supposed to sound, however did you try the sound from a DHC-2 Beaver? It was built around the same timeperiod.

Thanks for the tip, cheesegrater. Smiley  What makes the 195 sound unique is that it is a seven cylinder radial design.  I'll look for a DHC-2 Beaver and listen to it.  Right now I'm using a P-51 Mustang.

I suggest the first plane on this page; a DHC-2 with an excellent soundpack:

Thanks again Cheesegrater.  The Beaver looks like a radial engine.  I'm downloading as I make this reply.  I will install it manually.  However Flightzip2000 has a feature that will make it easy to assign the Beaver sound to the 195.  Thanks again.    I have a logitech Internet keyboard.  Simvaition has been assigned to my "favorite" button.

Latest update:  I followed cheesegrater's lead to the Beaver.  Thanks!  Searching can be difficult.  The Beaver itself crashed me with a FLTSIM98 Application error.  I think I have a bad memory location.  However, I was able to install the Beaver's sounds to my 195 folder.  I was disappointed with the lack of flaps noise.  ???

I  need help with a couple of things: First, is there some way I can add sound for the flaps?  Second, can I modify the ground turning radius?  Once on the ground. the 195 turns so wide that I can't stay on the taxi ways.  I have to taxi in the fields to line up for another takeoff.  I have taxied in a real 195 at the Price County Airport in Phillips, WI with no such problem. Cry

I think the flaps in the Beaver are manually operated by a hydraulic pump so the flaps don't make any noise while moving.

You can add sounds for the flaps and you can change the turning radius. However, I never did either of those things so I am not exactly sure how to do it.

Also just to make sure, when you taxi you should have the "Auto-Cordination" option OFF in the FS preferences. If you have it ON you cannot use the rudder which makes taxing with any plane difficult.

I sometimes get FLTSIM98 Application errors too, usually when changing airplanes. It is very strage, sometimes it crashes sometimes it doesn't.

It gives me a error too. I tracked this down to a couple of gauges on the panel. I don't know why they should cause a problem. ???

Thanks for the prompt feedback, both Hagar and cheesegrater. Grin

I believe the auto coordination is off, but I will check and make sure.  I'll be sure to save any file before I try to change it.  In the meantime, perhaps someone who has made these kind of changes will jump in with some info.

This is fun!  Cheesy I copied the flaps .wavs from my 182 and they sounded fine!  Today I noticed that the runway at Green Bay was under water.  Grin  I guess the Beaver is a float plane.  So, I deleted the old, copied the 182 touch .wavs, and changed the cfg.  It worked!

I have auto coordinate off but the 195 still turns to wide.   I'm still hoping someone can tell me how give it a more realistic turning radius while taxiing.
