...Meigs has been a part of FS for so long now as the default strip and I did all my early FS flying training from there and will be sure to miss it now that it is closed.........

I wonder how they will deal with it in the new FSX......Hope they treat it with respect and not just leave it as a blot on the land scape.......Maybe a memorial plaque that can be read from 500ft would be nice..........

I wonder too which airfield will be the new "default"....some thing about the size of Meig's Field probably. Not one of the big ones for sure. Bound to be in the US for obvious reasons I think...any suggestions/guesses?..........commoner. Wink

It's been a long while since my FS9 startup airport was the default (now it's my local at Shoreham in England) but I seem to remember that the default was Seattle/Tacoma rather than Meigs? Or is an old man's memory playing tricks?

does it matter if we already change the default home field?

Meigs was the default airport in all versions of FS until Mayor Daley set his vandals on it in March 2003. http://www.aopa.org/whatsnew/newsitems/2003/03-1-157x.html
I assume that Seattle was chosen for FS9 as Meigs no longer exists & M$ is based in Seattle.

Not that it makes much difference to me as changing the default airport is one of the first things I do after installing any version of FS.

And also the home town for Boeing too. They stayed with Meigs until it closed, can't see why another 'home airport' change would happen. Personaly, i'm glad they changed it anyway. In FS2000, I was getting tired of having to change AC and airport if I wanted to take something heavy for a spin!

Seattle is a stunning area and has educated this Brit as to what the NW of the US is like. You've got almost every kind or terrain virtualy within sight of the airport, snow capped mountains, valleys, flat plains, lakes and coastlines, industrial areas, high rise buildings, large and small airports. Where better?

I think Meigs started as the default because that was Bruce Artwicks home airport. Not sure exactly but I know he went to school in Chicago and I think he developed flight sim while he was there. I guess Gates just finally decided to change it to his home airport. Cheesy I would imagine a lot of development for the game is done out of KSEA. These are just my assumptions.

I usually switch the default airport to the one of the following specifications:

1. Switch default to my current location [Love flying the Herc - the P-38 is still on top of my list though].

2. Switch to where most of my family live.

3. Switch to my country of birth. Did you know that Nicaragua has the biggest lakes in Latin America? It also has wide mountains and plains.

I'm sure that the default airport will remain Seatac, but BG's home airport is actually Bremerton Municipal. It's a good place to make default if you are bent on certification in Flt Simming.

...I liked Meigs in my early sim days because it was to me the perfect place to practice my flying skills .......for one thing it was easy to find being on the coast near a big city. You could always look around and see it there when you were all but lost.......... and also being aligned North South made it simple to line up for landing practice..........the other large airports dotted around gave ample scope to practice more skills such as ILS approaches etc.........

Trying to get some of the bigger crates off there was fun too..........my incredible FS flying ability (cough cough) owes a lot to that little field and I'd be sorry to see it go..........commoner Cry Cry Cry

It doesn't have to be a Cessna or even at an airport. Set the flight up exactly as you wish, then save it under an appropriate name & check the "Make this the default flight" box. You can save it from any view (like Spot or Virtual Cockpit View) you wish. For example; if I want to practice landing my favourite Tiger Moth at my local airport of Shoreham I save the flight when I'm on the approach & make it the default flight. I also use this method when testing/setting up new aircraft, panels & scenery as it makes it so much easier & more convenient.

Microsoft (not M$! word from one guy's mouth is they absolutely hate being called M$) is definately sympathetic to Meigs, that is why it was left in FS2004. I think they will go the same way with FSX. KSEA will be the default start, but Meigs will still exist in-game, and you will be able to select it.

I think when you install FSX you should be able to select everything like default start airport, mabye load real world weather on startup, system settings. Make life alot easier 'cause when i fire up FS X  for the first time i dont want to take 20+ mns to adjust settings, I want to just hit "fly now" and go!

I think the general FS community would prefer keeping Meigs field rather than updating it to Meigs park (sic).

I know I would.  Daley was way out of line for sending in those non-union guys to Meigs to carve up the runway in the middle of the night.  I say, we keep Meigs in FSX.

Can I ask what reason the Major gave for closing it suddenly? Was it to make money on the land? I'd have thought that the Meigs real estate would be very valuable.

As it's reported, Chicago Mayor Daley's wife wanted to turn Meigs field into a park.  He had been looking for a reason (excuse) to close down Meigs, but the FAA would have none of it.  When 9/11 happened, he claimed terrorists could take off from Meigs and crash into the Sears Tower, but that didn't fly, pun intended.

Previously, Daley and Illinois Governor Ryan had a joint agreement with the FAA to not get rid of Meigs.  When Ryan lost his re-election bid (which marked a milestone for the beginning of his corruption trial) Daley, decided on the basis of a technicality their agreement with the federal government was no longer valid since Ryan was no longer governor.

And to impose his will to close down the airport, Daley hired some non-union workers to come in in the middle of the night and carve huge X's into the runway, rendering it unusable.  It was noted about the union status of the workers added to the intriege due to Chicago being a strong union-friendly town.  Also, Daley didn't even notify the FAA when he did it.  The FAA learned about what was done AFTER the fact, just as the owners of several planes rendered stranded at Meigs as well.

The general concensus with Chicago citizens was "Yea, Daley was wrong, but who cares?"  Chicago citizens are used to government corruption and intriegue.  Since the Meigs incident, there have been many more scandals and incident of government corruption.  It's just life in the "City with Broad Shoulders"

That photo was probably taken soon after the runway was vandalised. Those will be the 16 stranded aircraft ex-pat mentioned earlier in the thread.

i think they should put a big pcture of mayor Daley in its place... he could be sporting a nice little swastika on his forehead, and perhaps even a little square mustache to boot.

[flips the bird at the picture]

he could go to hell for all i care.

the only good thing he's done in his reign i believe is he just passed a law stating that:

by 2008, all bars, taverns, sports arenas, trailer parks, public parks, and public areas must be no smoking areas. this law went into effect on sunday. thats the only good thing he's done.

bleh... get him out of office already, he's corrupting the Chicago aviation system.

he puts money before everything else..

now he is a democrat, so blah blah blah...

not only did he close meigs, he rejected the 3rd airport in the works, he wants to expand O'Hare without regard to the residents or businesses, he's practically closing midway, not to mention it's going down the drains anyway...

but those are just the small fish to fry. he was tied with George Ryan in the Hired truck scandal and the licenses' for bribes scandal. those hit the chicago area big... so a nice portion of the city isn't to sympathetic with him....

thats just my opinion. and what i read from the so-called "news"

I don't listen to news anyways. The news stations [all of them] are just becoming too close-minded. Nowadays, all they want to talk about is bad news.

Anyways, I hate the guy for what he did with Meigs. I mean, shutting down a well-known airport for no reason? Come on.

.....Well said Kat..............THAT is enough to hate the guy, so don't let us get into politics too deep or the thread will be locked and it's been pretty interesting (IMO) so far.........commoner.  Wink

no he closed the airport for a very good reason... but he's still an idiot.

he closed it because he didn't want terrorists try and throw a cessna at the sears tower. let me tell you, i've been up top at  sears tower, and the landing planes for O'Hare 9L, throw them a couple degrees off and they're in downtown.

it's not so much that, but he had to do it on my birthday...

The new park is called Meigs Park, but so what?  Whoop do do!

The weak excuse about slinging Cessnas at Sears Tower is exactly that, weak.  Anyone ho's been to the lakefront in the summer have been treated to a number of light aircraft towing banners.  Any one of those light aircraft can veer toward any of the skycrapers, or even down into Soldier Field during a Bears game and nobody would be able to do a thing about it.

...surely, I bet just about everyone has buzzed the playing field in Soldier Field at least once.  Or taken a low level river flight up the Chicago river...

.......so, I heard reported on WLS today that Mayor Daley needs a heliport built south of Navy Pier: read - Meigs Field.  But but but, didn't Daley say Meigs needed to be closed because of terrorist threat?  But not to worry Chicagoans, the good mayor assures us that helicopters don't provide a terrorist threat.  Somehow, someway, helicopters are incapable of crashing into the Sears Tower.

Here's what I've heard:

The demolition was done illegally, literally under cover of darkness; the FAA was not even alerted so that a NOTAM could be issued, and he'd been planning this move, and trying to get support for it ,long  before 2001.

To my eyes, it looks like a classic land grab, combined with a play for the Chicken Little voter bloc.
Unless they build a plane-proof dome over the whole thing, the city will never be any safer from aerial attack of any kind than it was when the airport was active, with locals in the air helping keep an eye out for anything odd.
The weak points (as proven on 9/11) were, and are still, the large airports serving the major carriers and large aircraft, not little Meigs Field, which must've been like a crown jewel for Chicago. It's a crime, and a shame.

I agree, closing Meigs is not going to stop someone who is twisted enough to ram a plane into a building...
But it would be cool if it was developed for model aircraft fliers or something. For little gas powered model planes for our non-virtual but non-literal fliers Grin.
