Since other than the official Q&A released, those who know can't tell, I'm opening this thread to really speculate on what FS-X will NOT include...

.... a Krupps expresso maker, for those addicted to long-haul flights!

A new Up to date brand spanking new computer to play the blasted thing on Grin Undecided

I mean, exactly HOW much of an improvement can this be on fs9 without compromising on the performace of the computer system? My computer is by no means ancient, but if microsoft release FSX with 'the best graphics ever', i think a lot of people will choose not to buy it purely for the reason that their computer can't handle it. If FSX will be 'the next-generation' in terms of graphical ability, wont this mean microsoft will have to get rid of things like the learning centre, extra planes and pre routed flightplans to compromise with the sheer size of the game?

Hope i started a good debate with that one Wink

cheers

Computer technology is the fastest area for what today is top of the line and tomorrow obsolete area there is.

My rig runs FS9 wonderfully, however I cannot nor do I expect it to run FSX as it does FS9. What does that mean? if I want the immersion level and the graphics that FSX will offer, I will have to upgrade. If not I can stay with the perfectly viable FS9 that I have now that I enjoy immensely.

Just because FSX is released (when its released) doesnt mean I have to jump in immediately and buy it. I really feel I would be let down because my hardware wont support it as its meant to be enjoyed.

I can hear it now though when it is released...

I just blew $60 and it looks like crap.

What are your system specs?

yup, no sense getting "fired"  before you get off the ground!

(On the other hand, when you DO fail a "career", an animated Bill Gates* pointing a finger at you and calmly saying "You're Fired!" would be worth the career mode!)

* modifiable to be other personages - Donald Trump, Branson, ... and to make it REALLY humiliating, and animated teltubby shaking its finger/paw/appendage(?) at you whilst shouting "YOU SUCK!")

Hey my computer already smells like Jet A so that wouldn't make a difference.  I think the smell of propwash and burnt oil would be nice though

What will FS not include?  Hmmmm.....How about that irish dude who runs into the middle of sporting events wearing a kilt and wielding large pieces of cardboard that advertise religion.  Yep,  pretty sure hes not going to be running across the RW at KORD screeming at passengers.

Oh, and FSX will not include all the great aspects of business aviation.  Sure it has a lear and a King Air, but what about  wealthy pricks who complain about the weather?   And we can't forget all those arrogant Piaggio pilots and owners, FS will never be complete untill it includes them.  And what about a "ground crew mode" where you wake up at 4am to deal with all of the above, plus crazy ramp managers, and stick-in-the-ass flight options pilots who bitch about not having their slow ass Hawker on the ramp after they call only 10 minute ahead of time.  Then you finally reach luinch time and a friggin' Bonanza pilot whines about how he never gets the parking spot in front of the FBO, and he claims "if you would put those damn chips down, and get off your ass, things would run better"(when in reality this is the only time you have sat down since you got there).  And when the shift change time comes, you learn that they need you for second shift because another flightline worker is hung over and needs you to work for him.  So you do all of that over again and you reach 2159cst, when a fax comes in.  Who could that be?  Why its none other than a Netjets catering order.  So you go out to find caviar and filet mignon, and in the process you are called by 5 netjets people all to confirm the same order.  But of course you got the order, but there are no vendors of caviar this late.   So you say "**** it" and buy some peanut crackers and beef jerky out of the vending machine, and call it a day.  That would be just ****ing sweet, would it not?

Yup, MS has along way to go to be "As Real As It Gets"

Sheep strike just before rotation. Then try out the emergency procedures. Radio out your emergency, get priority landing clearence. On approach see the fire crews at the edge of the runway. As you touch down, switch to outside view and see them race along behind you just before they vanish in the shower of sparks and smoke as your wing or nose starts to make contact with the runway. You come to halt, gather yourself together, open the entry door just as you get showered in foam. For added realism, you get to smell the stuff............it stinks.

I think that the Russian mail-order-bride would be good, but we cannot count on it.
However, I would expect to see an improvement in the IFR navigation wourld; i.e. SID/STAR database, and for the turbine equipped aircraft a working FMS/FMC. There are a few 3rd party solution to these problems, but I have not seen anything yet for FS9 that will allow ATC to assign IFR SID/STAR routes without the player actually programming all the fixes in before the flight himself on the planning page.

There is a solution, well in Alaska. Just follow the right rivers and hope you make the turn at the right inlet/outlet. If you know what you're doing while following a map, it will never fail you. Real IFR flying Grin

The meat of the flight simulation engine  - flight dynamics  - is much better than FS98.  For the modeller, Microsoft, through the SDKs, has improved the ability to provide much more accurate flight dynamics for more types of planes.

I will agree that more airports, more navaids, could be added to FS98.

Pretty clouds, lightning effects, reflective textures, etc., yes, are "better graphics" - enchance the experience, but are not absolutely essential.

FS2000/2002/2004 are not just FS98 with pretty graphics  (note that I toss in the visual model in this, since what the model looks like has nothing to do with how it flies).  I think that the basic FS engine has been vastly improved over the versions.

I have FS98, I use even today it on my notebook.

I have FS2004, had 2002 and missed 2000 because had better things to do at the time (recovering from a near fatal accident, actually), and I use/have used them all.

I'll be damned to the lower pits of hell if I find a real difference in how the planes behave from a version to another.

I'm with you that the prettier graphic are nice, but they do not make the simulator.

PS
This is my opinion in the matter. No offence is meant to any of you reading.

I think you have just caused apoplectic convulsions among the die hard flight dynamicists, who argue that a .01% improvement in the flight dynamics is a major improvement.

Like you, I can't really determine how much of an improvement a specific model is (I guess we'd have to test the FS98 default Cessna vs its FS2004 version and how "close" they come to the official Cessna numbers)
but from the flight dynamics modelling standpoint.

I heard that she hired a very good PI. He managed to video Ken whilst cutting up some white powder with his Amex card as two hookers looked on.
Barbie took him to the cleaners.

They can have as many conniptions as they desire. Facts are and remain that NO real improvement in dynamycs has been done since FS98.

I can't say about previous versions' dynamycs, since it's been a while I used them and even after having downloaded them all from abandonware servers I still have to find a suitable PC on which run them (read: slow enough), but I know what I talk about regarding from FS98 to nowadays.

How about being able to tell a co-pilot to land it so you cant crash in 1/16mi visibility, and while its landing go back to a seat and watch out the wing-view, with a glass of wine in your hand?

I wouldn't be surprised if M$ did impliment that to FS. If you look at the screenshots, one of them clearly shows cars and trucks on the improved roadways. However, no one knows if they move like AI or not. Well, maybe not like AI, most likely macro based. I've seen one scenery addon that used macro for animated car traffic. I think I found it at AvSim. I'm not sure if it was for FS2k2 or FS9.

I have one of those installed.  It has a verry busy road just under the approach path to the single runway.  It is an island airport if I remember correctly.

The visual impact of that stream of cars as you are son short final is AMAZING!!!  It changes everything.

best,

You'd be surprised.   I was surprised to see the FFDS site linked to from one of the tech bloggers from Microsoft.  There has been at least one Simviation tutorial linked to/mentioned by the Microsoft tech bloggers

That they cannot answer/reveal (in detail) what they're really considering or not, and where they get the ideas from, is another matter.

We have all seen how Microsoft has re-emphasized the fact that they are committed to supporting 3rd party content providers.  This allows them to concentrate on the basics+enhancements, instead of having to provide the details (cover all periods and types of planes, etc)

I think we are getting a bit ahead of ourselves here. How often has MicroSoft given details about a piece of software only to have it "changed" at the last minute.  The promises that where bantered about for XP made the mouth water!! In comparison FSX, I would think is a relativly simple  program (I may be wrong, I await the corrections that I am sure will come.).  It will be very interesting to look back at what has been posted here a few days after the release of FSX and compare what was said and what we get..  Remember, MS said no more Blue Screen of Death with XP.............had it 3 times last week.
