Re-Installing FreeFD Instruments

I am still planning on running FreeFD instruments... and if Don LaFontaine (FreeFD author) does not release a new version.... likely I will be staying with the old version that I already have.  Project Magenta is nowhere near affordable on my budget.  Wink

I had just a little time to devote to work on the simpit.  At one point earlier, I had one of the networked computers set up running the FreeFD PFD on the pilot's left hand MFD screen.  But with a lot of the physical construction going on for other aspects of the simpit, those connections were all temporarily removed.

So since the machine driving the PFD was already set up... and now just has to be re-connected to the network, I concentrated on setting up the second networked computer. This one will take care of the ND and the standby instruments.

Got the 2nd instrument machine set up on the network.  Installed the brand new updated version of FSUIPC in the sim and WideFS 6.50 in the sim and on the network client.  Copied the FreeFD ND and  Backup Gauge programs to it.  Fired up the sim for a test......Bingo!

...

Moving Teamspeak to Secondary Machine

One of the constant problems with the default ATC in FS2004 is that the sound is on the same "channel" as all of the other sounds in the simulation.  Not very realistic when all the blasting engine and wind noise is routed to your headset  Wink.

For flying online however ....... this can be remedied.

This afternoon I copied the Teamspeak program files off the main FS machine where I had been running it and onto the #2 networked machine that is also running the ND and the Backup instruments.  I then opened up the appropriate permissions in the network firewalls (the DSL modem firewall already has the ports open for Teamspeak onto the net).

Now the "radio" audio for online ATC  that is coming from Teamspeak is separated out onto it's own speakers / headset.  Add TComSet into the mix, and when I tune the Comm1 radio.... the Teamspeak chaannel switches seamlessly.

WHAT a difference all that makes!

Next, to finish this off I used the button press assignment in my registered copy of FSUIPC to send a keypress out across the network via WideFS to act as the "hot key" for the PTT switch for Teamspeak running on the #2 machine.

So now the #1 button on the left side of the CH Products yoke grip is my PTT switch for Teamspeak.

Unfortunately... no real pictures possible of this stuff.

As the details slowly come together...... the realism increases  Grin.

OK... I got the original FreeFD PFD computer back on the network this evening too.  So now the PFD and the ND and the Backup Gauges are all "online" and working at least at a "base level".

Took a couple of test flight circuits..... and it works slick.

The shots are a little fuzzy due to the low light... but you can get the idea.

And last but not least here...... a quick editing job to show sort of what it will look like when the projector is working:

John, you need to get out more. You just have too much time in your hands. In fact, we all need to get out more. Sooner or later we will all have homes that will resemble our favorite airplanes. Grin

Thanks CraigL and Katahu.  And what do you mean "will resemble"  Wink?

Online TACAS Installed

Tonight I spent about an hour figuring out how to configure the latest version of the freeware AIBridge program (version 3.0) to pick up the data from a multiplayer session in put it into the data stream as if the sim was running in "normal" mode.  That allows stuff like TACAS guages to see the traffic while you are online.

The FreeFD ND display has that TACAS function already built right into it.  When offline it works all by itself.  Now with the AIBridge program running...... I have full TACAS support while online.

It makes an amazing difference in situational awareness online!   Shocked Grin

I've often thought of getting an old transport fuselage and turning it into a trailer-home... that would be just perfect, with a simpit in the nose!! LOL!!
