I guess it has been 26 years today since Elvis died, I know a lot of you weren't even born yet, but for those of you who were around, do you remember where you were when you heard the news?
I was only 11 years old but I remember them breaking into the regular programing on TV and making the anouncement.

Don't remember it at all......had no interest in it, but I do remember when John Lennon died .....layin in bed with my wife just before headin off to dreamland, my immediate thoughts came out of my mouth to her........" Well, thats it then,.......there's no way there'll ever be a Beatles reunion now.........."
........in the morning I was hoping it was just a bad dream, but sadly..........

I was at my grandmothers house, she had the same birthday as Elvis, and she died exactly one year later Cry
I remember John Lennon being shot, I'd just got in from school when I heard, but that didn't really affect me as I wasn't a big fan. Although I like The Beatles early stuff.
I remember the Amsterdam crash as I was seeing friends in Badhoeveredorp (close to Schripol and Amsterdam) that day.
How about the Challenger disaster? The first space shuttle gone. I was at home watching TV when the emergency broadcast came up, and as a huge space fanatic at the time was shocked beyond words.

I was 7 at that time, too youg to realize.

The newspaper photo's of the Chernobyl reactor room after the meltdown is something i remember vaguely, but anything before that...

The murder of Pim Fortuiyn (dutch politician), 6th may 2002.
They said that it had happened in the middle of a radio programme on a dutch music station, as someone who had worked there had an interview with him (on another station), but that program was notorious for making fake news statements, so i didn't totally believe it until they said it on the official radio too.

9/11.
I just arrived home, and as i didn't have that much homework i went upstairs to my brothers room for a little talk. He was watching TV (CNN), and a few minutes after i entered his room we saw the second plane hit the building...

Same here, I remember watching it on my little black and white TV in my room.

As for 9/11, I was at work and one of the girls I worked with asked if I had heard on the radio that a plane had hit a building in New York, I told her I hadn't, a few minutes later the whole shop went dead silent when the second plane hit, everyone was glued to the radios as all this was happening. But our supervisor was such a prick he wanted all the radios turned off so everyone would go back to work.
The plant manager jumped his ass and asked him how he expected anyone to concentrate on work when the country was being attacked.
I remember the chill that went through my body as they announced that the towers had collapsed.

I remember 9/11 as I got an SMS from a friend while I was at work, and they said there had been an explosion in NY.
I thought maybe a pipe bomb or something (us Londoners are well hardened to terrorism after 3 decades of it! Or so I thought Roll Eyes).
I got home and switched on the TV, and sat there watching the same broadcast over and over again for about an hour and a half until the wife got home. Then we just sat in front of the TV and only watched the news channels all evening. I was gobsmacked. There just aren't words to describe what happened.
I remember my fear that some of my friends could have been there (they had recently moved to NY), and it was 2 days before I got emails from all of them to say they were okay. That was a relief.

Worse yet, living through the week of Apollo 13 and knowing that just after the fatefull message " Houston, we've had a problem.........." there was a trip to the moon, the critical burn to avoid the orbit and swing back toward earth for the return to an untested direct re-entry..........6 days of constant Hell...........

This I remember well..........

9/11 I was working at a small rental company, in the
shop, radios were not allowed, we had heard the news
from a customer and I had gone to my truck and got a
small radio, so we could keep up on it! The boss knew
nothing about it, came in the shop and fired everyone!
Later realized what he had done and tried to get people to come back, I was shop boss and never
went back, they mailed me my check, No one should
talk to another human being like he did!!
That memory is as bad as the 9/11 thing to me!!

I used to run a really boring machine at work, so I would pick up a paper every morning to read between machine cycles, I read about Stevie Ray Vaughn and the helo crash that morning.

I remember when they found Kurt Cobain's body, I was a big Nirvana fan, and was doing something around the house when the news came over MTV. I was pretty much glued to the TV while the story unfolded.
Really sucked too, because we were around the same age and I was really into Nirvana's music, my band was doing Nirvana covers at the time.

9/11 I was sitting in my English Lit. class, and my principal came in and sat on my teacher's desk and said, "There's been an explosion in New York. The Twin Towers are gone and many people are dead." My teacher started crying, and all of my fellow schoolmates sat in disbelief. When we all went to homeroom, each of the rooms had a computer, so we got on MSN and watched a 757 and a 767 fly into the WTC.  Cry

Columbia, I was on a ski trip with my girlfriend, and we heard some people talking about it in the lodge.
Horrible, horrible stuff. Cry

9/11 i was in maths. The teacher (who you could have slapped round the face with out him noticing) off handedly said that a couple of planes had hit the world trade center.

Columbia, I was at home. Turned on the telly to see the bit of film of the space shuttle breaking up. Then I heard the news report and said "oh dear".
