Title: 32 Bit or 64 Bit
Post by Bubblehead on Feb 16th, 2013 at 11:56pm
I'm loading FSX into my new PC using Win7 Ultimate. The OS listed two program files: One the standard program file and the other with (x86) after it. I've read somewhere that 64 bit programs should be loaded into the standard Program Files while 32-bit programs into the Program files (x86). Is FSX a 64 bit or 32 bit program?

FSX is a 32 bit. Yes, install to the x86. I don't think it matters that much, though.

I've seen, as well as heard that FSX that gets loaded to a 64bit application will load and start, but only with just a couple to 1/2 the default aircraft loaded, to not even any at all, and the program not responding, or program failed completly to initialize. Add-ons wouldn't show or install either.

You could check microsoft and get their forum feedback as well on this matter. Works for some, and not so great for others.

On a 64-bit OS 32-bit software will install by default to the Program Files (x86) directory. My advice would be to do a Custom Install of FSX outside the Program Files directories, on a separate drive from the OS if possible. Mine is installed to a directory named C:\FSX. This will avoid future problems with the security features of Win7 when attempting to edit/modify files in the Program Files directories.

Presently I have FSX loaded in my secondary HD in both program files (standard and (x86). My primary HD is a 240 Gig SSD and I'm trying to use it's capacity sparingly. Other than using up space in my secondary HD and I have plenty to spare, I'm not experiencing any problems with the game. So unless there is a better idea, I'm leaving it as is. Although as one contributor suggested, an option would be to install FSX on a separate HD all it's own.

When I download an aircraft file into the FSX (Simobject\Airplane) folder of the Program File (x86), it will not appear in the list of aircraft so I deleted FSX in the Program File (x86). The FSX loaded in the standard Program File is working just fine. In the future, I'll get me a 120G SSD and use it exclusively for the FSX.

When you start adding scenery, planes ,terrain, and all the great freeware goodies here on simV, it grows fast. I just checked my fsx folder & I'm almost 139G on a 1T HD. But SSD's will keep going down in price so you could always add another one later.

Maybe i misunderstand you here, but
dont download or zip directly into FSX!!
Open downloads and zip files into another folder, you can make one yourself and call it what you want, and get the files from there. Copy them in the right places inside FSX and you're on.
