Title: Whidbey Island NAS add on scenery in the works.......
Post by CHUCK79 on Jan 19th, 2013 at 2:36pm
Photoreal coverage of the Whidbey Island Naval Air Station in Oak Harbor, Wa. Photoreal scenery will include seasonal and night textures. All taxiways, runways and aprons redone to match real world imagery. Over 40 custom buildings have been modeled using Google Earth and other sources for reference. I used imagery of the actual roofs for most buildings. Over 100 parking spaces added (combat/cargo) using Google Earth images for reference Also added are static EA-6B and FA-18 aircraft by Guy Diotte on the aprons and working FLOLS trailers and arresting gear by Sylvain Parouty.

Here are some shots....

There's still some work to do....a few buildings still need to be modeled and I need to either try to model or find a static P-3 Orion. I have tried using Mike Stone's FS9 model, but it kills FPS for some reason. I haven't tried converting KBT's Orion with SAMM yet.....I have a feeling that it will have the same result.

If any of you GMAX wizards out there feel like whippin' out a simple static U.S. Navy P-3 Orion........ ::)
I thought I'd ask. In the mean time I'll try sharpening my GMAX skills ;)

Very nice Chuck! So are you building the base yourself for the sim or is it an outside source? I have the MAIW Whidbey Island NAS on my FS9. I have some shots of it from the air out of the cockpit of my EP-3 and some ground shots too with the EP-3 and EA-6B. I will post them today sometime. The base you have looks great.

Thanks guys :)

@Ratdog........I'm doing it all myself. It's a little time consuming, but it's rewarding at the same time 8-)

You are more than welcome and requested to use my photo collection of NAS Whidbey - http://www.flickr.com/photos/avgeekjoe/collections/72157631978033443/.

If you could also please consider doing OLF Coupeville, that would be much appreciated too.  Photos can be browsed at http://www.flickr.com/groups/nolfcoupeville/

Also please e-mail this Oak Harbor Navy Leaguer when you're done at kunzler_josef-AT-comcast-DOT-net and I will ask our webmaster & Facebook maestro to link to your body of work or a sale page.

I also should add that you'll want to get a GMAX model of an EA-18G Growler such as possibly this one - http://www.turbosquid.com/3d-models/3d-super-hornet-fighter-ea-18g-model/668455 - and populate the western end of the tarmac with them.  Just a thought.

THANK YOU FOR DOING THIS!!! :)

Thanks for the photos 8-) 8-)

Coupeville already in progress ;)

I'm making this available as freeware, so the growler model isn't really an option. I have included static FA-18s by Guy Diotte.....although not accurate it fits the budget ;).......and I will definately let you know when it's complete :)

Here's a link to the beta........I've done a lot of work since uploading this file, but I would appreciate any feedback possible. Especially from someone with an interest in Whidbey Island NAS ;)

Thanks, guys.....yes, I am using GEX and OrbX PNW. I don't have UTX but I think it should be completely compatible ;)

A few thoughts:

a) MAIW has a freeware Growler model available.  Ditto for the EP-3E.  I've ported over their AI stuff - not their scenery - over to FSX + yours, good stuff.
b) Thanks for the WIP thought of OLF Coupeville, going to be awesome.
c) AI isn't taking off for me w/ your scenery for some reason.  Please check into.

I've uploaded Whidbey Island Nas Version 1.0 to the SimV main site. It has many updates from the beta. As soon as it pops up I'll post a link :)

Thanks for the heads up on the Growler 8-)

Coupeville being worked on at this moment ;)

Your AI isn't taking off because my taxiways are a mess :P
They exist, but none of them are designated or named or whatever you have to do. This is my first project of this scope and the learning curve is pretty steep :-/

Thank you so much for making NASWI your first because the only airports this Skagitonian uses these days are KNUW, KNRA, KBVS, 74S & LGSA (to go bomb Libya from Crete).  Let me know if you need help w/ AI too since I'm going to do my own tinkering w/ the MAIW stuff tonight - kunzler_josef-AT-comcast-DOT-net.
