Title: What is a BMP texture file with an "R" ?
Post by Jean Loup on Jan 10th, 2013 at 4:11pm
I have tried my first repaint (copy/paste in reality & virtuality) and the results are not that bad. What has me waiting to try another (Osa's Ark, on PaNam S-38: what a beauty she is!)  are those BMP files with an "R" at file the name end. I got away with them on my repaint of "Spirit of Africa", because the nacelle, booms & others, have same color as the all white New York American: so I could paste/copy.

Other color BMP's are posible to edit with Microsoft Paint (some do not accept a color change: just turn gray. Another story that is!). This is what I mean: :o

opens like this: :( :( :(

and they plague the whole texture folder! :-/ :-/ :-/

I read here about Pixia, so I installed it, to no avail: >:( >:( >:(

At least, we can see something like interference ... :-X :-X :-X

BUT look at my desk icons after Pixia install!!! :-? :-? :-?

Hope this goes after deleting Pixia ...(or change Icons with PROPERTiES: I'm a believer).

Some program missing I am, free because poor me I am. Do you Masters, have any sugestions ? [smiley=dankk2.gif]

I add an (off topic) image of my present repaint advancement, [smiley=2vrolijk_08.gif] flying around Mount Kilimanjaro (back to the thirties! this is). Took off from Amboseli, Kenya. :D :D :D
:D :D :D

The texture files you are trying to open are in Extended BMP format. You need a texture converter like DXTBmp to open them & send them to your editor.  http://www.mwgfx.co.uk/programs/dxtbmp.htm

This can also be used to save them back in the original format after editing.

I certainly do hope so! Or it would be of no use ... GRACiAS for this link:  [smiley=tekst-toppie.gif]when I opened that page, I went for an intensive course in chinese! [smiley=lolk.gif] In spite of that language barrier, I learn using new tools by the slow (and prooven) method of trial & error (mostly error!) and I am downloading that program. If not bored, I will update my primitive results.

I will keep Pixia, seems a good tool for image handling. & I found the lost Icons of my Lap desk:

A Capricorn Master, perhaps? (the last one was crucified more than 2000 years ago) The song says Hell is in Hell-0! But I say Hell is in tex ... tex-ture repainting!!

Now I am downloading the Gimp program. to see if it can change 24 bit depth BMP files, to 32 bit depth BMP files. Try to say that with a mouthfull of Quick chocolate powder !!! And you'll know how I feel ON repaints, at the moment. :'( :'( :'(

Ni modo, I have to keep on trucking !! [smiley=lipsrsealed.gif]

DXTBmp will do that. File > Save As > Extended Bitmap > Extended 32 bit 888-8

From BAD to WORST !! :'( :'( :'(
My example: intentions of including Rothmans DH-89 repaint into DH-89 BEA & Classic Lady.

I modifieded this file:

With this (copy/paste from Rothmans):

With this result (using DXTBmp program):

& this other flop result using Gimp:

This texture, after the Gimp treatment for 32 bit depth BMP, did this when uploading to Picasa as BMP (to upload it, I converted into JPG):

... so it made a difference. I'm so  :'( :'( :'( about to forget about this aircraft. The problem is being iMPOSSIBLE to install the 'http://www.simviation.com/1/search?submit=1&keywords=fs9_dh89.zip&categoryId=31&... into my copy of FS 2004. How many versions of FS 2004 are there? Mine is not from 4 disks but was among other games in a DVD called Microsoft Software Jukebox, and istalls with a double "L" in the name "FLLight Simulator 9". I corrected because before that, I thought it was a trashy game!! (did not work).
Maybe I got a deffective copy ... (all original software DVD's were included when buying the Lap from HP, in the USA). >:( >:( >:( I do not thik so, because all my other aircraft addons, work excellent:

So, patience is the word! [smiley=bath.gif]
(to add salt over the injury: this Lap was given to me by my son, after he got a Mac; has Windows Vista Home Premium sp2 installed. I have never been so unhappy with an OS, since Millenium Edition! No wonder my daughter in law & son went Mac after this ... handing it to me, must be my son's revenge!) ;D ;D ;D

I just checked this out. The file named fs9_dh89.zip from this link works fine for me. http://www.simviation.com/1/search?submit=1&keywords=fs9_dh89&categoryId=&filename=Y

The auto-installer will extract it to a folder named Dh89a V2. I can see this folder in your shot of your FS9\Aircraft directory.

Yes I do have it, but was empty. I use it for the texture file I am configuring: ::)

I posted this problem at: Dragon Rapide Problem
At a certain point, the installer quits & says I should rerun the installer because the AiRCRAFT CFG file is missing; but, how can I correct that miss, if I do not have install?. Over & over, until today ... :'( :'( :'(

This one problem only I have among all my OK addons, plus another one problem: Adolf Gallands Bf-109 installs without the propeller & without the pilot. I have so many One Ou Niners that I just forgot about it. Other intents I made to install addons for FS 2000 & some for FS 2002 (not all, only a few), when going to fly them, I get a warning that some features are not compatible with FS9 & will not be working. :-/ :-/ :-/

Yes, I read your problem with the installer. I can't explain why it doesn't work for you. It might be something to do with Vista. Try again, this time directing the install path to a Temp folder outside the Program Files directory. If it extracts the files you can then install it manually.

These are common problems with aircraft intended for earlier versions of FS. Some can be fixed & others can't. The best solution is to stick with aircraft created for FS9.

If you must use FS2000/2002 aircraft click the NO option on the warning pop-up.

If you already clicked YES this can be fixed by editing fs9.cfg. Look for the aircraft name under the [FrameCallNoWarn] header. This is an example from my own CFG.

[FrameCallNoWarn]
F-106A=1
B17G=1
B-17G=1
B-17E_RAF=1
Stirling=1
CanbPR9=1
B-17D=1
Lightning F1A=1

If the value of any of them is 0 change it to 1. This will give you the best possible results.

I have a special folder for installers to direct:

I have read that article about main reason for aircraft not to install correctly, is using the BLASTED installer.  It does not fill that file before quiting, unfortunatly. I believe it is a Vista thing! When I get enaugh money-money-money, I will update to Windows 7. Much better OS: as usual with Microsoft, one OS is shity & the next is OK.

Excellent tip! But when I did click YES, the aircraft misses something or other. That's is why I started the repainting (never ending) nightmare, instead.

I use DXTBmp  and then Paint Shop Pro, works for me.
By the way Hagar, congrats on making 70, I'm only 65 years young, hope to see 70. The more repaints, the better.

Dave ;)

The "Preview" button is always vital for me, to sort out all my errors and omissions, spelling mistakes, grammatical errors, etc, etc, ....before...and after, I make a post!

I mostly wear the button out!... :-[...!

Paul... ;D... ;D...!

By Hägar, I've got it !! [smiley=dankk2.gif] My HUGE stupidity is only matched by my stuborness. [smiley=lolk.gif] (but didn't learn any more about texture R files, though!) It WAS a Vista thing: I ONLY had to run the installer as an ADMiNiSTRATOR !! [smiley=2vrolijk_08.gif] [smiley=2vrolijk_08.gif] [smiley=2vrolijk_08.gif]

Not only could I add the Rothman's DH-89, [smiley=tekst-toppie.gif] but added other two camouflage liveries. Well, so much for my textural privateer intents  :-X :-X :-X

I thought we'd sorted that one. The texture files you had problems with were in Extended Bitmap format. The R in the file name is not significant.

Yes Master, it only made them invisible for Paint. After downloading all those new (for my ignorance) BMP image handling programs: DXTBmp, Pixia, Gimp, Serif Photo Plus, Image, Alpha Searcher ... like back to Kindergarten, I feel !! but NOT quiting  :o :o :o

You should only need DXTBmp & one other graphics editor. Try a selection by all means but when you find one that suits you then stick to it & learn how to use it. :)

I don't wish to confuse you even more but you might like to try Paint.NET ---> http://www.getpaint.net/

Happy Birthday!  [smiley=beer.gif] [smiley=birthdays.gif]

The one I know & have used since inheriting my father's PC (with Windows 95 in 2001, now with Windows XP & somewhat slow, but still trucking) is "Microsoft Paint" in connivance with "Microsoft Office Picture Manager".

Another program that could open the skin files of "SFS 4.1 Demo" is "Serif Photo Plus 6.0"; I used it for skining the Schleicher KA-8B sailplane as mexican (pixel by pixel, a never ending quest). So, I have to  first check them out & THEN decide ...  [smiley=dankk2.gif]
