Title: Removing Trees? Uneven elevation?
Post by musicflyer on Jan 7th, 2013 at 6:25am
Hello all you people out there.

Before I get started I should say that I feel like I have seen a topic on this problem before but I couldn't find it after searching here. if this has been done before then please direct me to that topic.

I am trying to build some airports and every single time they end up right in the middle of a big group of trees. Is there any way to remove the trees so that the airport will work?

I am building real airports that are not in the default and I would rather not just "move" them over to a patch of land with no trees...for obvious reasons lol.

The other problem is that the elevation will change naturally (sometimes only a foot and sometimes six feet and evreything else)...so when you put in the elevation in ADE and then try it out half the airport is sticking out of the ground. Since other people make airports everyday I assume there is a way around this. Anyone know of any fixes?

I'm using Airport Design Editor 9X (ADE9X).

Thanks for any help.

If you are using ADE, then I would suggest you create a polygon around the airport area, and set it to airport background, flatten exclude autogen.

As for the elevation issue, FSX airports are flat. By default, you cannot make them slope to match existing ground. As you know, they simply drop off to the existing ground with steep cliffs. Best bet is to try to match the airport elevation as close to the existing ground elevation as possible. This is an unfortunate limitation to FSX scenery and requires substantially more advanced skill to work around. ADE by itself is a great tool, but it is constrained by the limitations in FSX.

Thanks! I'm still getting used to ADE and it never even occurred to me to try that!  :)

I figured the terrain was unfixable with the  altitude thing. I guess some of these runways will just be floating just above the ground. Still frustrating though >:(...oh well, nothing I can do about it.

Thanks again!

If you're designing for FSX......

With ADE9X-using the polygon tool that Pegger mentioned, you can also set the altitude and flatten the area of your new airport.

ADE9X comes with a manual, 'ADE9X-Manual-EN.pdf' found within the 'Manuals' subfolder folder where you installed ADE9X. Chapter 15 describes the use of the polygon tool, and creating an airport polygon.
