Title: any shooters here?
Post by wahubna on Sep 23rd, 2012 at 10:30pm
Im a pretty avid shooter and between my dad and myself have a good array of long guns and handguns.
Any other shooters out there?
Feel free to share some of the guns you are particular proud of having.

We got:
Ak-47
SKS
Mosin Nagant
FMA 1927 Colt (made from a German battle ship ;) )
Dan & Wesson 357
plus an assortment of other 9mm & 380 handguns

My particular favorite:
Marlin .17HMR bolt action. She is my wonderful small game slayer!
Second favorite, Ruger 10/22 with high-capacity mags. Nothing beats that gun for cheap plinking fun!

+ 1 for the 10-22. It's idiot proof, shoots straight and is perfect for a beginner to learn Firearm Safety and Handling.

Personally, I'm into black powder shooting and have a Thompson Center .54 Hawken muzzle loader, and two pistols; a Spiller & Burr .36 cal revolver and an Uberti reproduction Colt Walker .44 revolver.

The Walker was the largest, heaviest revolver ever made (4lb. 9oz.) and until the introduction of the .357 Magnum in 1935 was the most powerful revolver in the World. 1,000 were manufactured by Samuel Colt & Eli Whitney Jr. for the US Mounted Cavalry and another 100 were made for the civilian market in 1847.

For firearm collectors, the Colt Walker is one of the rarest firearms in existence, and the possession of an ORIGINAL Walker
is considered to be the pinnacle of one's collection.

Clint Eastwood carried two Walkers in The Outlaw Josey Wales, and retired Texas Ranger Captain Augustus McRae carried one in Lonesome Dove.

But wouldn't the World be a much better place if everyone had Pointy Sticks, instead of Very Big Guns...

If we had pointy sticks instead of guns, invariably conflict would arise as to who has the biggest, pointiest stick, then undoubtedly someone might be killed vying for the largest, pointiest stick.

The old saying "Guns don't Kill people; People kill people" would apply in this scenario, as well.

The problem isn't going away by sticking your head in the sand; having peace, harmony and goodwill in the World is a two way street. Sure, we want it... but do the Syrian, or Iranian, or Georgian, or Somalian regimes even think of such things or are they so lost in their ideological beliefs that it doesn't even evoke a serious thought?

There is no such thing as a idiot proof anything let alone a firearm ;D ;D

Myself;

12 bore shotgun
.22 rifle (with moderator :))
S&W .357 K frame on a six inch barrel
Sturm Ruger P89 with two 15 round magazines (pre ban 8-))
and several CO2 air guns.

Nice to see we got some shooters here!

About the 10/22 being idiot proof...if I can operate it flawlessly, its idiot proof! ALTHOUGH I must say sometimes it can get a wee bit picky on ammo brands.

About mankind always fighting, my favorite musician has this song called "Some Humans aint Human"
A line of which goes "Jealousy and Stupidity don't equal harmony"..which is to say, EVERYONE gets jealous and EVERYONE is an idiot about something and we all have opinions that rarely completely agree.
Me, Im an idiot about most things  ;)
But at least I admit it openly!  ;D

Yes Alex it is serious. Remember, you cannot compare different countries and how guns are used with one and other. The way it is in your country is in now a reflection of how it is in mine. And yes everyone is entitled to an opinion :)

ask the families of the victims of Batman 3 premiere ,that guy thought he own their lifes for several minutes (maybe he had those guns as a sport too), of course if he would have a knife or a hammer wouldn't kill so many people in a short period of time ,BTW I forgot this is one of many shooting cases in USA  ,BTW where was that case last year of that guy who also kill so many people in and island ,I remember was a peacefull and almost perfect country was it Norway?  :P

to me Fire guns are not sport are designed to kill  in the whole world specially and AK-47 :)

Many people (myself included) use firearms to put food on the table.......call it a sport if you'd like to, but many actually rely on guns to feed themselves around here. Without guns families would starve....."evil" is a pretty big stretch when you look at it from a different perspective ;)

Guns are not the problem. People are the problem, and if they'd let us settle things the old fashioned way criminals may think twice  8-)

S+W .38 Airweight Revolver

Remington Model 770  30.06  9X optics

I'll say it again: Firearms don't kill people. PEOPLE kill people.

Alex... everything that 'person' did or caused was his responsibility. The firearms used were the implements he used to commit that heinous crime. I heard the radio calls on my scanner AS IT HAPPENED; I live in the same municipality where the crime took place. His mental instability and anger were the root cause of the crime.

I'm sorry you live in an environment where that occurs on a daily basis. Ultimately it's the people involved who have to decide to live a different way. If they choose not to abide by universal decency and civility, to live and let live... then what can one do?

It is a serious thread, for we live in serious and perilous times.

Woah guys, did not mean to start a debate here.
Here in the states in places like where I come from owning multiple guns is extremely common. We hunt with them, we own them for the history, we own them because we like them, and we own them because for some it is something expected as in a tradition.

For me, it is most definitely all of the above. ALL of my male friends, ALL of my dad's friends, and the vast majority of males living in my town have an arsenal. Yet we ALL deeply respect the lethality they have and ALWAYS exercise safety when handling them.

To us, owning a gun is like owning a car. Cars I might add kill far more people than guns... as does cholesterol...

Take my 10/22, it was a gift from my grandfather who was an engineer for Chrysler for 20years. My 17HMR, a gift from my dad. My dad wants to pass his guns down to me and me to pass them down to my future son if I have one. Its a tradition.

You may have heard on the news about a southern California man put under 72-hour psychiatric observation when it was found he owned 100 guns and allegedly had (by rough estimate) 100,000 rounds of ammunition stored in his home. The house also featured a secret escape tunnel.

My favorite quote from the dimwit television reporter: “Wow! He has about a quarter million machine gun bullets.” The headline referred to it as a “massive weapons cache”.

By southern California standards someone owning 100,000 rounds would be called “mentally unstable”. Just imagine if he lived elsewhere:

In Arizona , he’d be called “an avid gun collector”.

In Texas , he’d be called “a novice gun collector”.

In Utah , he’d be called “moderately well prepared”, but they’d probably reserve judgment until they made sure that he had a corresponding quantity of stored food.

In Montana , he’d be called “The neighborhood ‘Go-To’ guy”.

In Idaho , he’d be called “a likely gubernatorial candidate”.

In Wyoming , he’d be called “an eligible bachelor”.

In Wisconsin , he’d be called “a deer hunting buddy”.

And, in Alabama , we just call him “Bubba”.

I imagine there is not one for Michigan because most people here are broke....most of us have plenty of guns but not a whole lot of ammo  ;D
Although when a group of us hit the range we easily burn through hundreds of rounds of just one gun...but those trips are very rare...it gets waaay to expensive to shoot like that often!  ::)

I have ~200rnds of .22LR for example. Enough for one trip to a local range for some plinking (after I fix my front sight) or some small game hunting. For the pistols its 20rnds there, 40 there, 10 there...AK and SKS 0 rnds, Mosin, maybe 10, Lee Enfield 0, .17HMR maybe 25rnds (half a box for 2 guns)...you get the idea...point is most of us at least in Michigan do not have a vast stock pile of ammo.
My dad keeps his pistol ammo at this level (which sometimes peaks over 50 rnds) because he does carry with a CPL.

No, Foz... rather, bayonets which aren't susceptible to flames and don't splinter...
Of course, my .22s didn't have bayonets but it was fun splattering marshmellows, skipping cans, etc.
There was an incident, of which I'm not particularly proud, when there was one death to my count, with my .22 Remington bolt-action long barrel: he'd stolen his last apple out of our Golden Delicious trees when I shot a bullet through a porcupine's head.

I insist on the right to defend myself inside my house if necessary in whatever manner I choose.  I can ready my rifle faster than I can make a phone call, one motion to undo the safety and I'm good.  Which of the two might best save my life if someone succeeds in breaking in?  Just have a plan of action, and stick to it.

Japanese Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto expressed an appropriate comment in the 1940’s (though many believe the forthcoming statement was actually propaganda originated in the U.S. and stated by American press outlets, and not the Admiral).

“You cannot invade the mainland United States.  There would be a rifle behind every blade of grass.”

Whether or not Yamamoto ever actually said those words, doesn’t diminish the facts as they stand.  As appropriate as that statement was in the 40’s it is perhaps much more appropriate now as the U.S. appetite for guns has evolved into something worthy of a talking to from the Catholic priest, worried about a nation’s gluttonous behavior.

About 8-9 million guns are produced each year worldwide by best estimates; some 4.6 million (last reasonable estimate was made in 2006 Q4) of those end up in the hands of Americans, approximately 50% of total global production.  Estimates of 100 million guns in private hands are accurate on the low end, with some sources stating total gun volumes are nearing 350 million in private hands and somewhere near 475 million with active military arms included.

If there wasn't a gun behind every blade of grass in 1940 there is in 2012.

In my times, we just showed our teeth, and waved a wooden club, as a threat...

...later on someone came up with the bright idea of sticking a nail through the end of it, making it a much more painful/lethal weapon!

I think bows and arrows followed it, some time later.

I had great fun in with a spud gun whist on holiday in the States this year. We did it at night, it was like watching a Howitzer going off. Building one in Germany though would get you a very nice one room hotel with three meals a day........................ ::)
