Title: SimV virtual airshow?
Post by wahubna on Jun 30th, 2012 at 8:15am
In the topic before this Xfalcon talks about a virtual airshow in FSX being done on a different server. I was wondering if we could organize one for here on our server preferably in FS2004 as it runs better on most people's systems.
I was thinking of gathering a list of good free-ware planes for people to download so during the show you actually see what plane they are flying. Wanna-be performers can pick an aircraft from the list (or add one) and do a performance in it (maybe multiple). My favorite airshows have a warbird event, modern military, modern hardcore aerobatics, then some 'gentle' aerobatics in non-traditional aerobatic planes like Matt Younkin in the Beech 18 or Gene Soucy in the Showcat(modified Grumman AgCat). Any thoughts?
No need to get crazy with aerobatics, crashes will be turned on so if you crash, your demo is done.

This would not be a very rigorously detailed and organized event with specific performance times, basically one after the other. Someone will have to be the 'show boss' to coordinate who can take off, land, enter the show box, etc.

I do not mind organizing this if people are interested.
Any flight demo is welcome, STOLs, aerobatics, warbird showcase, formation flights, team demos, comedy, etc. Speaking of comedy routines, I was thinking of trying the 'drunken flying' that Kyle Franklin does. I might have to add some HP to the default Cub though  ;D

The Sim V, FS 2002 and FS 2004 Air-shows used to be very popular in the somewhat distant past, then enthusiasm dropped off and it was no longer well supported.
Note: This was at a time when everyone and his dog was using FS 2002/FS 2004, and FSX was just a twinkle in Uncle Bill's eye!

It takes quite a lot of organising...with very strict rules applying!.
Buzzing, and over-flying the spectators by rogue Pilots was strictly prohibited.
Only single planes, or groups of planes, were allowed to be in the air at any one time, under the strict control of the organiser.
And all had to land before the next group took off.

A suitable Default Airfield had to be selected, common to everyone.
Note: FSX and FS 2004 scenery doesn't mix very well!

Aircraft were a mix of default aircraft, and pre-selected aircraft, from a pre-published list only.

Non-participants and Visitors on the ground had to be using the; "Paper Aeroplane"* to ease band-with and frame-rates. With engines switched OFF!

Frame rates locked to 20 FPS max.

A lot of work and organising is involved... ;)...trust me!...!

(And its a BIG disappointment if no-one turns up on the day!)

..and don't forget..."TIME ZONES" around the World!.... ;D...!

Note: For the Sim V Multiplayer Server, (178.63.253.134), the necessary password must be requested beforehand.
(Useful to prevent outsiders from gate-crashing the events!).

Good luck...... :)...!

I supose FSX can now be introduced too.
I know there are some airports wich have the same mesh in FSX and FS9 from my flights with fozzer. ;)

And I doubt anyone would join except me in a piper or possibly a WACO taperwing doing crazy stuff, you in another WACO and of course fozzer in his cessna. ;D

I am now imagining the airshow:

HERE COMES JETPROP IN HIS MODIFIED WACO TAPERWING!!!
CRASH

Ehhh,jetprop had a dentist apointment.
Now onto 'Wahubnah' Adam!
'Yes thank you,I will be flying the WACO great lakes modified ..bla...blablabla...blablabla...'
OK SHUT UP ADAM!

Due to a tragic accident Adam can't perform today,we'll go onto our last show; FOZZER IN HIS CESSNA!!!
I'll now signal paul to take off; 'Paul, you can take off now'
'zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz'

YOU ARE F##KING SLEEPING YOU OLD MAN??!!!!

;D ;D ;D ;D

Memories of lots of fun and laughter with a good crowd of Sim V Multiplayer Friends who have long since disappeared...

A rare occasion when aerobatics was actually allowed in a Multiplayer Session!

Fun times!

;D ;D ;D thanks Jetprop

Well doing ad-hoc stuff with small groups is fun still, I am willing to work on organizing one but obviously it would be later in the summer.

Somethings to think about though for me, thank you for the response guys.

In the mean time, I will continue to put on ad-hoc airshows with who ever is doing a multiplayer session with me. I try to follow real world airshow rules and be 'safe'.

Currently trying to pick which default planes are capable of some aerobatics in FS2004. Cessna 172 makes the cut, Cessna 208 lacks a bit of elevator response but its power and high lift wings make for a lot of fun!
Next the Mooney, Baron, and Kingair.

I already had Reno, but thank you for Moffett field. I hope to be getting UT USA, UT Canada/Alaska, and GE Pro soon as well. When I install those I was going to go through all my addon scenery and dumb some excess junk.

I stuck with a real-world equivalent amount of added HP in the default 172: Lycoming AEIO-360 putting out 200hp.

On that note, how can one add a smoke system to a sim bird?

Through the aircraft.cfg file, copy the [smokesystem] lines from the extra-300 and past it into the aircrafts.cfg

If my laptop comes back functional then I will first re-setup my sim then get working on the virtual airshow stuff. I had figured out some good routines in the Cessna 172 (very slightly modified cfg file: 200hp .1 added to control surface effectiveness) and in the Ford Trimotor. The Trimotor I adjusted the cfg to match the HP of the last version and slightly tweaked the controls surface effectiveness similarly to what I did in the 172. She still refused to some maneuvers, but due to its size it still made for a very graceful routine.....which started with a 1 wheel take off and ended with landing on 1 main wheel, hoping back and forth between the mains then doing a 1 wheel turn-around at the end of the runway!  ;D A friend spawned in right at the end of the runway once as I was doing the 1 wheel stuff so I had to switch wheels then raise the wing enough to avoid him!  ;D

Man I miss my flight sim  :'(

I now have the problem:
Which bird?

The WACO taperwing is meant for FS9 and works in FSX and is slightly harder to manouver but has more lift.

OR the default piper cub(which I think is also in FS9) which is easier to handle but less lift. :-/

EDIT:It will be neither,going for a jet I think.

EDIT 2:I know exactely what I'm going for...
A glider!I took one for a try today and the default FSX glider is quite agile!

I have some aerobatic aircraft of choice: Extra 300, Zlin Z50, MiG-21, and the ol' F/A-18.

I've actually got a show planned out for my MiG-21 that I could easily adapt for the F/A-18 because MiG-21s do NOT do high alpha and slow speed flying at all.

I don't realy have a plan because the glider is kinda unpredictable.

Oh and maybe a slow formation flight in the end?

Remember an routine does not have to have death-defying stunts or 'extreme' maneuvers. I have seen a sail plane do aerobatics in person at 2 airshows. That one does have a small (I mean really small) jet engine. But most of the routine is just simple maneuvers done in a graceful manner.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fhXTGLybNvQ

One thing that annoys the crap out of me about the non-aviation crowd at airshows is they all want to see near-crashes. The closer the plane appears to crash the better in their eyes.

The Piper Cub can do a wonderful routine by the way with 0 cfg changes. It has plenty of lift, you might want to check your fuel and passenger weights next time. I always reduce passenger/pilot weight to 1 140lb person to approximate my slender build  ;D
With 15% fuel and my meager 140, the Cub is a wonderful performer!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F70tClnEKQI
Just remember it is all about energy management.
Even an F/A-18 can be pretty boring if the pilot cant manage his energy during a routine. Those aerobatic birds like the Extra and Pitts make it real easy to power through mistakes, although they do allow for much more hard core maneuvers IF the pilot knows what to do.

The Mig has some wicked role rate though and is great for doing those 'surprise' passes to startle the crowd ;D
A good idea with the Hornet, do something I used to see at the Muskegon Air Fair:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NEV13rLqSLw
Mis-matched team stunts are always awesome. Doing formation stuff might be too much for us, but doing like trailing stuff (where one follows the other) through a maneuver or pass would still be cool.

Alrighty folks, I think we need to start figuring out a date for the shenanigans to take place. This week I will be examining planes and airports for use in the show. I would like to keep all the planes used to those available here at SimV so folks can download them and actually see them fly. Nothing irritates me more in a multiplayer session than seeing Fozzer is flying his 150 only to see a F-5E zip past! Maybe you guys are okay with that, Im not though.

#1 AIRCRAFT RULE: I think no payware planes. Keep it all free and what is available here.

For airports, with 25,000+ out there, Im sure there are better but I am thinking of my local one: KBTL WK Kellogg in Battlecreek, MI. The surrounding area is not to abusive on the autogen while the airport has the longest runway in Michigan at just over 10,000ft allowing for a wide array of aircraft to fly here. There is also obviously a nice long taxi way next to the long runway that could be used as an alternate runway (Oshkosh style  8-) ).

We should make it an airport with the same mesh in FSX as FS9 otherwise it might look weird, luckily there are a decent amount of them with similar meshes.

OR we could use FSX and FS9 compatible scenery.

:-?
I dont understand why the mesh is important or what scenery you are referring to.

I was just thinking of using an airport that gives the best frame rates for everyone but is the most flexible.

Anyways, Mig-21s are fine. One thing that I cannot get to work with those high performance jets though is staying with in a decent distance of the show line. Usually I end up tapping the throttle for a wee bit too long and then Im GONE  ;D

Ignore my idea for that airport.

But meshes are important because there will be both FSX and FS9 users and the mesh is sometimes different in each version. ;)

First, Jetprop, that was my fear too. We really need to pick a good airport with accommodating scenery. You could say just turn all the settings down, but those landmarks are very helpful (necessary) to have a shot at doing a decent performance.

Second, I picked my plane (I might use others as well)....

Yep, that's right. The default Mooney Bravo with 3 changes in the cfg. 1- corrected the number of props from 4 to 3 (yes the original was 4 bladed somehow). 2- increase of prop diameter by .2ft. And 3- installation of the Lycoming AEIO-540. The obvious one is smoke though.
Turns out she is a lot of fun to do aerobatics with.

Got the idea from this fantastic pilot:

A few canidates for mine are:
Piper cub:great at most thing but lacks roll-rate.
f-14:Awesome at everything but I tend to take it too far. ::)
extra 300:Great at everything but unoriginal.
Harrier:VTOL,medium-high roll-rate,but not much elevator control.

I cannot stand the default Extra 300 in FS9 or FSX. Try this honey:

The Coyote WILL out perform the default Extra in every way while still being easier to control.

You might want to check out that plane a little more closely...it has a VC that blows the default Extra out of the water and it is based on very real unlimited aerobatic aircraft. They very greatly in engines and names (all personalized and custom machines) but I have seen several in person. The most legendary and powerful of these custom aerobatic planes is the Turbo Raven that Wayne Handley used to perform in until a major mechanical failure forced him to pancake it in (he lived).

I have seen this guy perform perform before and it just leaves your jaw hanging. That airplane was incredibly powerful!

Now back to the Coyote, it is a good representation of the Turbo Raven but instead of a turbo prop it has a nice piston engine in it. Please try it, you will love it!

I have no idea, classes have started for me, Design-Build-Fly competition has started (year long), and I am starting work on my senior design project, oh, and I am still working..in short, I have been getting distracted and no longer have the time to work on planing this.

Me?... ::)...

...as usual I am busy exploring California, and the surrounding area, every day, in on-line multi-player, where occasionally, one of my Mates turns up to join me...
..(...providing that I have not dozed off, in the Parking Area!)... ;)...!

Paul... ;D...!
