Title: The kid doesn't hate it
Post by ftldave on Mar 13th, 2012 at 11:12pm
Flight was on my big screen and caught  the attention of my 10-year-old son. "Dad, I want to fly that." He sent the Icon through its paces, a little less than an hour of play. At the end he pointed at FSX I had running on my sim pc. "Flight's more fun than that," was his verdict. "But you're better at missions. I'm better at landings." I mentioned that FSX has thousands of different airports and lots more planes. His reply: "So? Flight looks really cool." I think that's the 10-year-old saying Flight has better, smoother graphics. So, Number One Son made his verdict, which I found interesting to observe. Many times he's buzzed Mount Ararat in an FSX F-18 (Armenia's his mom's home country), and he tends to like hot fighter jets. Maybe one day he'll fly a ... Predator drone.

Too bad there's no F-18 in Flight.  Or Mt Ararat....  Or Armenia...  Or Predator Drones...  ::)

Kids dig games. Especially if you own a console like xbox or PS3. Hook FSX up to the big screen and see what he thinks then. In Hawaii, with the freeware Icon and see if you can trip him up. Like the ole Pepsi Taste test ;D ;D

True, no F-18, no extra scenery. Net yet, not in the introductory release ... but I bet there will be eventually. But this father-of-a-10-year-old does have to wonder, how much will it cost?

The new P-51 Mustang for Flight goes for $7.99, but has no VC. What's with that?

The Maule M-7-260C add-on costs $14.99.

So, more content starts to become available. Can an F-18 be that far behind?  :)

Kids don't miss much, no "trippin' up" my boy, believe me. But the previous comment is right, and I think my son's reaction to Flight showed it. He's used to high-res, high performance games with smooth, cinema-like animation. Can't fault him for that, no matter how much you're dedicated to FSX. And I bet the Microsoft marketing guys would much rather have the interest of 10-year-old kids than us simmers, sorry to say. They'll sell more copies, er, sell more downloads that way, to us Dads who'll get to pay for it.

Why would your son hate Flight?

Flight is a good game just not a sim.

Flight isn't designed for Simmers & MS don't think that your average Joe would care, or even know what a VC was.

Yes, actually it can, unless they're planning on you flying it to Alaska.   :P

I was comparing my son's reaction to so many of those in the forums, the ones that make Flight out to be a great evil with no future of ever improving. As is, Flight's not that interesting to me, either, but I expect it will expand and improve, maybe even with more sim-like features. I didn't really expect my son to immediately say that Flight was "better." That was a surprise.

It's no surprise to me that a 10 y/o would prefer Flight to FSX.

Kind of underlines what it's all about. Children love games - but I bet even he will not play it for too long ...... Because they also like interactive fun creatures when they are young and innocent - and flames and action when they get a bit older ...

Following Pete statement

MSFS was a game for the people who makes the money ....adults  ;)
FSX like a game has to be the most boring one a 10 years old kid would say  no score , no shooting other airplanes   just a bunches of buttons and indicators I don't know how to drive that game I've seen in in real life  ::)

With my Great-Grandchildren, its five minutes flying around in my FS 2004 with uncontrolled aerobatics, followed by quickly crashing into the ground, before dumping it, with a mutter of disgust, and a hasty return to their X-Box, Wii, etc, etc, to get their thumbs into frenzied activity again, running around shooting and totally destroying things!
..its so much more fun...they say... ;)...!

Flight Simulation is extremely boring to little ones, everything takes far too long!... ;D...!

Paul... 8-)...!

Just like the real thing then. ;)

Time to spare, go by air.

I myself haven't said Flight is a great "Evil" & I don't think anyone else has.

We have just said that Flight at the moment isn't a sim & won't be in the foreseeable future.

Also you would have to invest hundreds OR thousands of Dollars in Flight to do something in Flight that you can do in FSX for $30.
