Title: The future of SimV
Post by Raoul98 on Feb 10th, 2012 at 5:12pm
How is the future of simv looking when flight is released?? Can you make repaints for the default or can you make models? Is the future of simv like doomsday?

If flight does not support third party add-ons, like it seems it will not, most dedicated sim pilots will continue using FSX, FS9, and any other sim that does.  I would expect simviation and other similar sites to carry on supporting FSX and FS9 for quite a long time.

The question is: Is there a demand for Computer Flight Simulation?

If so - SimV will exist until that demand dries up.

The real question would be

'The future of MS Flight'

Please notice that there are plenty of people here still using FS2004.  Heck... there are still people using the FS98 section.

Flight or no Flight....... SimV is on solid ground.

I would bet that FSX, FS9 will go the same way that Microsoft Train Simulator has. That was a 2002 release, not really expanded in any way by Microsoft, but sustained by enthusiasts and third-party payware and lots-and-lots of freeware. It's only just now winding down because it's gone out of print, no longer to be found in the bargain bins and online auction sites. Flight will certainly have third-party add-ins, but they'll have to be vetted and "monetized" via Microsoft's LIVE, much like the Steam business model. And also just like the Train Simulator web sites, enthusiasts will keep SimV going for a long, long time.

How do you know that Flight will have third party? From what I've heard there won’t be any third party & the add-ons will all be controlled by Microsoft.

My only slight worry is that at some time, the supply of original copies of FSX will slowly dry-up, together with MS Support.

FS 2004 is becoming more and more difficult to source, and copies of FS 2002 and earlier are practically non existent now!

Unless someone else takes up the publishing and distribution of the MS Flight Sims, I fear that the familiar jewel cases will disappear from the game shop shelves!

My pristine copies of FS '98, 2000, 2002, 2004, FSX, and CFS 2/3, are locked safely away, and treated like gold dust!

As long as we still have access to the original MS Flight Sims, Sim V, etc, will continue to thrive, I'm sure!

Paul.... :)...!

I must say, I have a lot of sympathy for the actual programmers of "Flight" when they read the various forums with the disparaging remarks regarding their best efforts at producing a new flight simulator.
It must be very disappointing.
I suspect that they are working under strict instructions regarding the overall specification, and have little choice in the end result.

The Boss is in charge!... ;)..!

Paul...waiting to see what it is like when its finished.. :)...!

Excellent point, Paul.

I would imagine that the main decisions on Flight were made by the Vice President of Profits.   ::)

Maybe we can get some of those talented programmers to make a piece of freeware for FS9 or 10. It would be good therapy for them.. 8-)

I could not agree more. In my humble opinion, remove thir party programmers from the equation is a major step in order to direct people to look elsewhere for a flight simulator program. If that will be the case, I am one of those who will stay with FSX. After all, more then 80% of "my" airplanes are third part software. (I really do not see Microsoft as going to make the effort to present, for example, a Electra X or a Superconnie in Flight, now do we?)  :-?

As I mentioned before; when you fly, you need someplace to fly TO.  What is going to happen to all of the people out there who like to fly commercial jets?  What about the bush pilot types?  Military fighters?  Rotorheads? Is there going to be ATC?  Is there going to be any number of things that made FS so great?  The lack of third party add-ons is a deal breaker for me, but it is far from the only problem Flight has to deal with before it can fill FSX's shoes.

As for the future of Simv, when the last simmer has shut down his PC and left the building, I get the feeling Pete will be the one to turn off the lights on the way out...

One thing that Microsoft usually does very well is to line up developer support for its major projects, for all the right reasons. But like I said in my post, I would expect all third-party content to be available only via LIVE, with Microsoft getting a percentage of each and every sale. Apple does the same with its App Store. Other game developers have exclusive deals with Steam. I'm not so quick to get crazy angry like others and say that it's all evil. Too early to make a judgement. But you can just expect it, see it coming. That's the business model they want for Flight.

I would imagine that with the failure and disapointment with flight, there will be a renewed interest and some further private developement of FSX enhancements.

Personally, I wiil admiit that I have lost some interest with FSX due the the developement of flight.
However, now, FSX looks pretty damn good! :)

Raoul, to answer your first question, Flight won't support third-party & you can't even make repaints of the default aircraft because it's all in binary code.

But, the more I see of Flight the brighter the future of Simv seems, because Flight isn’t a hard-core flight simulator, if it can be classed as a flight simulator at all.

It is what happens when a product producer does not/cannot/not allowed to listen to the end user of said product. Look back at the "wish list" posts, have any of them been fullfilled.

Well... ;)...

From my present observation of; "Flight" so far, I don't think any of our favourite Flight Sim sites have anything to worry about... [smiley=thumbsup.gif]...!

The previous (and present) MS Flight Sims are, and will be, as popular now as they ever were!

I think the introduction of; "Flight", will give a new lease of life to our ever-popular Flight Sims;...FS '98, FS 2000, FS 2002, FS2004, CFS 2/3, and FSX!

Having been introduced to; "Flight", I suspect that many/most of the new Pilots will be interested in their new experience, and decide to migrate over to the "proper" MS Flight Simulators, and therefore boost our numbers!

So......It may be to our advantage!

Paul...FS 2004... 8-)...!

...and more Folks will benefit from my; "Cookery" posts!.. [smiley=beer.gif]...!

And we also have to remember there are also other flight sims out there that are still developing and open source like fly!Horizon and the much better known flightgear. Xplane is also there :)
My point being that there are others that are also developing and that have so much potential. fsx is also being developed by us 3rd party developers who every year bring an improvement to the simulations.

Yes hyperpep is right; there are some great free alternatives one of which I had never heard of.

But FSX is still being developed, IRIS are working on their F-22, Carenado are working on a 182 & will release their King Air at some point & All the freeware developers are still full steam ahead.
