Title: 2012 F1 unveils
Post by expat on Feb 7th, 2012 at 10:34am
Is it me or are all the teams vying for the butt ugly car award this year. It seems that only McLaren are not taking a hatchet to the front of the car this year....

Lotus

Red Bull

Williams

Team Red

That's better..... :)

Woah...  :o >:( Those new cars are so ugly! Like you said, only the McLaren looks good. Those new noses are just terrible.

Mclaren is the best looking but from the 4 uglier ones the red bull looks the best.

and why do f1 cars ALWAYS look nearly the same? ::)

Rules is rules, and generally the very clever aerodynamiscists come up with almost the same answer.

Anyway, if you think cars look the same (other than the early Toro Rossos, which were effectively the same basic chassis as the Red Bull of the time as a customer team), take a look at 1995's Benneton B195 and the 1995 Ligier JS41. Me thinks they were sharing aerodynamic data! Ditto for the Ferrari F2004 and the (Ferrari engined, amazingly) Sauber C23! ;D

The Ferrari looks like something my little brother would make out of Lego.....

I just hope it's as structurally sound as a Lego car and a part flies off and removes Mr Ecclestone from his Ferrari sponsored thrown so we can get on with racing without the little goblin and his stewards inquiries.

I'm sticking to the phrase 'A good looking car is normally a fast car' and hoping Mclaren dominate the whole season it's about time the drivers and constructors championship trophies was back in Woking where they belong.

This annoyed me at first but then I remembered Sky haven't got Jake Humphrey, he always seemed so out of place. I'm just hoping I get the F1 channel, I have the HD pack so I think I will get it.

As Clarkson would've said... "It looks like it was designed by a ruler"  ;D

Ugly cars, but at least I won't have the subscription package in place to be able to see them for most of the time!

He wasn't wrong. It's just not necessarily live any more.

And much as it's easy to blame Bernie, the BBC are a lot to blame for taking on rights that apparently couldn't afford (I say apparently as they still seem to have cash for lots of other rubbish, including another TV centre when it became fashionable to base national organisations oop north).

Can't believe that the dwarf did not have a sub contracting clause in the F1 rights somewhere though.......
Not like him to slip up like this. Maybe his mind was on how much money his daughters wedding was costing him ;D

My thoughts exactly. Not that most of the others are that far away. :-/

All in all, as already stated, rules are rules, and aerodynamics are more important than looking good, when your main target is try to win. :P

I thought the guy who designed the BMW M5 E60 was fired. Now he's back? ;D. He's even made the New M5 Gran Turismo worse ;D

I'll throw my thoughts in as its been a while.
Firstly why do they look the same? Well the FIA have basically drawn a 3D cube working template with lots of little dots in the middle of the cube and said go nuts within the limits of those dots. Unfortunatly it leaves no room for creativity. The only reason the Mclaren is the only "normal" looking nose is because they run a much lower tub and dont need the step in the nose.
The Lotus is without a doubt the best looking so far. The williams is the smallest and Red Bull appear to have a new idea with the slot in the nose where it drops.
The Merc is the release I am most anticipating, they have a new version of the F-duct that is front wing only and entirely automatic so legal. They have the smallest nose point, and also it might just be the poor quality of the pictures released, but it looks like the overhead airbox might be removed come the start of the season and the cooling vents run through the sidepods.
