Title: Some great Peformance tweaks That deserve its own topic
Post by michaelb15 on Sep 1st, 2011 at 3:21pm
So a few days ago when these forums were down, I was initally dissapointed, but it seemed to be a blessing in disguise for me..

I was over at the avsim forums, and I learned some things that increased my FSX peformance to almost double what it was before.. And Blurries? they are history for me..

One of the best tweaks that I added to the fsx.cfg
[JOBSCHEDULER]
affinitymask=3

adding that to the fsx.cfg alone increased fsx's peformance at least 50% for me. It made fsx use both cores in my dual core to the max, instead of it just using 1 core and rarely using core 2..

Before tweaking I wouldn't even considor flying low to the ground VFR, but now it runs like a dream and looks amazing with great FPS, as high as 25-30fps, (at least 10 at lower altitudes) from the 3fps I was used to.

Even flying over the 10 meter mesh that I downloaded from here gets at least 8-10 fps with the mesh LOD at 19m (http://simviation.com/1/browse-Terrain+Mesh-64-1)

The next thing was I put fsx.cfg through this website --
http://www.venetubo.com/fsx.html

That adds quite a few tewaks for autogen, and helps fight those damned blurries, so now I can fly at 200kias at treetop level and still have crisp clear textures, and the autogen doesnt dissapear at all, it loads perfectly fine atleast 2-3 miles infront of me..

I am surprised that nobody here at simv has ever pointed out those tweaks, and that is why I am here now spreading the word!

Hope this can help you too!
cheers for now, mike

Thanks very much Michael, I'll give this a try myself.

Actually, alot of us have used this, last year. Not to put a damper on your find, but I've since done a complete re-install and use very few, if any, tweaks. Back then the tweaks did improve my simming but since then I've upgraded my GPU, installed W7 64, and I haven't had the need for the tweaks. I'm glad they've helped you and some of the newer simmers here might not have heard of it and can maybe benefit from your post, so thanks for posting it. :)

Have you read through all the posts here in the Tweaking and Overclocking threads  ;)

I don't think the jobscheduler tweak is required if you are running with SP2 or Acceleration installed. In any case:

Dual-cores set it to:
affinitymask=3

Tri-cores:
affinitymask=7

Quad-cores:
affinitymask=15

Hex-cores:
affinitymask=63

Octo-cores:
affinitymask=255

12-cores:
affinitymask=4095

16 cores:
affinitymask=65535

My new computer had two duel cores. Do I set for duel cores or for a total core-age with the quad setting?

Try the quad core setting instead of the dual core one. Also you can try a setting of 14 or 7... I heard they might work better but not sure.

Do you add the [JOBSCHEDULER] affinitymask=3 to the cfg? I can't seem to find it

By default FSX with SP2 or Acceleration will utilize all cores.

If you want to change it then add it to fsx.cfg manually.

I found another interesting "tweak"  You can do with the weather to really shoot up performance.
Lower the visibility.
In the test I did, with unlimited visibility, it would jump in the ranges between 40-55 and 70-85 fps.
With 10 mile visibility, it jumped around in the ranges of 80-95, 140-155, and occaisionally jump to 190-210 fps when it was in the range of 140-155.
That's already +40 fps on the low end and about +70 fps or +125 fps on the high end!

If you want the specifications of the test, here they are:
Flight: Default Friday Harbor flight and position, going straight.  default white with blue and gold. C172.  day, 12:00 Local time, Summer.  Default Clear weather.
Settings: 1024x768x32 resolution.  Global texture quality=Maximum.  Bilinear filtering.  Everything else is off and/or as low as it can go.

Thankyou for this info. It is kinda good to know. I have been wondering if this would add to performance. Because it would make sense that a lower visibliltity would boost peformance. But I wasn't sure. but my tests may have been invalidated becuase of clouds.

But IRL, visibility is rarely greater then 10-20 miles. So keeping within these limits is a good thing to know! Thankyou!
