Title: Advice please on adding A1 traffic
Post by Dobermann on Jan 2nd, 2011 at 6:17am
Hi Simmers,  Up to  now, I have never bothered with adding A1 traffic because of the high demand on frame rates, but now I would like to experiance the task, so if there are any tips from those of you that have experiance of installing the "World of A1 installer 2.0" and adding aircraft, I would really appreciate to know of any problems that I could encounter and best be avoided, and, can it be removed without upsetting the default A1 traffic should I decide it was not a good idea, my outfit is quite high spec and could be capable of some addition.  My thanks go out in advance, as you forum chaps haven't let me down yet.    Dobermann.

Your topic may  get moved to the 'Adding aircraft traffic......' forum. If it does, to avoid confusion, edit it to indicate you are installing for FSX.

The program installation is straight forward and described at WOAI, WOAI Installer page. Airline installation is also straight forward. Do Not unzip the airline downloads, WOAI is looking  for the zip file.

-Aircraft: I would suggest you do not install the ai aircraft in your ..\SimObjects\Airplanes\ folder. FSX allows you to define additional simobjects folders. This keeps ai ac seperate from your default ac to avoid 'accidents' if you want to remove them later.

Create a new folder in  FSX, named 'AI Aircraft', example; ......\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\AI Aircraft\...

Then in the FSX.cfg>[Main] section add the line...
SimObjectPaths.x=AI Aircraft
Change the x to the next number in sequence.
When you run the WOAI installer you can define that path for the ai aircraft (FSX subfolder)

(Hint: I do the same for my addon ac. Created an Aircraft folder and appropriate entry in the fsx.cfg file.)

-Flightplans (traffic*.bgl files): WOAI traffic files are in FS9 format. FSX will use FS9 traffic files but if it uses FS9 traffic files it may ignore FSX traffic files. You may lose the default aircraft traffic and the Ships and Ferries traffic and any other FSX format traffic you have installed.

The fix (if you want to keep FSX format traffic) is to convert FS9 files to FSX format. AI Flight Planner (AIFP) can do that. Download here: http://members.shaw.ca/aifp/. (WOAI note: Converting will cause a 'fail' if trying to use the 'Expert' mode in WOAI installer. I keep backups of the WOAI FS9 traffic files for that reason.)

-No problem with removal. To remove completely, just remove the ai aircraft and WOAI traffic files, they're easily identified in their file/folder names.  If for some reason I want to do selective removal ( individual traffic file and livery) I use the WOAI installer's 'Expert' mode. I just temporarily move the  WOAI FS9 traffic files back into ..\Scenery\World\scenery\ folder to avoid the 'fail'.

All in all, a pretty simple process once you've done it a couple of times.

I use all FS9 AI traffic both military and civil, this does delete the default fsx, but as there are not many of them I do not mind, as the quantity of FS9 AI available is far greater.
I use traffic files from 3 sites  MIAW, WOAI and UKMIL I do not create traffic plans myself. I find this all works fine with no complications.

Thank you "DAVE" for your advice, after reading your reply and several other aticles on the subject, I have decided to leave well alone in FSX, I can see me running into problems there and losing existing traffic other than aircraft, and with running Windows 7/64bit its probably best, so I will have a go in FS9, the traffic I have installed there are from the simple method of just dropping aircraft and BGL's straight in to the scenery files without the aid of an installer,but of course you do not have the choice of many different planes.    Thanks again for your advice.         Dobermann
