Title: Gran Turismo 5...
Post by C on Nov 23rd, 2010 at 5:53am
Apologies for being as excited as a 5 year old in a toy shop, but GT5 has just landed on the door mat!

It's only been 4 years in coming! ;D ;D ;D :D :D :D

I thought it was delayed once again... And I thought it came out this midnight? Bizarre.

But it's the only reason why I'd ever get a PS3.

Looking at the web, amazon (UK) customers have been getting them for the last couple of days. In reality, I think amazon had such a backlog or pre-orders (mine was a year ago, you've been able to pre-order it since late 2008 IIRC), they just had to start fulfilling them as soon as it arrived at their warehouse; in their view perhaps better to potentially be told off by the regulators, than to upset and lose a lot of customers by not  having arrive promptly on release. :)

Ahh fair enough. I just know someone who works at Gamestation who said he had to be up this midnight for the release.

Good thing it's not on Xbox 360 otherwise they'd probably console ban you for it  ;D

About 30-45 minutes. It's an 8GB install, but it seems to have a noticeable difference on load times.

And how is the game??

Pretty good. Each event load takes 20-30 seconds, but then it is quite detailed. My only disappointment is that so tracks IIRC hinted at in GT5 Prologue haven't made it in.

Go-karts are cool too, and NASCAR and WRC make it a bit more interesting. Saving up for the Ferrari F10 now!

I've had another thought on this. Amazon do a pre-order price promise; if the price falls before release, then you get charged the lowest amount for a pre-order. Often games are ferociously price matched in the last day or so up to release (amazon has gone down £3 tonight). By dispatching early, they've already invoiced you at a higher price. :)

And to be fair, most mail order companies get your game to you at least a day before official release. They have to take into account it could take a couple of days in the post even though in most cases its a next day thing nowadays.

If only I had a PS3...

I was one of the first to get GT4, although there wasn't much of a line.  I had preordered it at the store, but was the only one there to get it when the box arrived

Wish I had a PS3

Gran Turismo 4 is one of my all-time favorite games

It took 35-45 mins to install on the HD ....... but as C said it significantly improves load times. Every time you play a new track it installs the info for that track ..... so the next time it loads quicker.

Has anyone else had the joy of the VW camper van race on the top gear test track yet? It's fun.

Joy? 30mph, and if you get nudged slightly you're disqualified! :) That's the only thing I'm not liking so far. Just a slight touch, or a wheel off the track, and in the challenges you're disqualified...

:)

Found it today!  There were two left at the WalMart.  (It takes a lot to get me into the WalMart here in Mountain View, and I usually need a therapist to go with me or else I'll get hauled to jail, it's insane in there)

Installing it right now, can't wait to try it!

Just installed the two "stealth" cars from the Amazon pre-order (codes came via email, cars redeemed in Playstation store). McLaren F1 GTR and the Maxda 787B...

...it may not be in the spirit of the game (I was surprised it let me), but it didn't half make the European hot-hatch championship easy in the McLaren! ;D ;D ;D

I've heard this game is a technical masterpiece but the AI is just as broken as GT4.

Any truth to this?

Title: Re: Gran Turismo 5...
Post by BigTruck on Nov 25th, 2010 at 10:22pm
I can't get it to install, unless I am just being impatient.  It goes through the install screens, then it gets to a screen where I have to adjust the resolution by putting all four corners directly in the corners of my TV, then hit X, and the bar slowly fills up and it says installing Gran Tourismo game files.  The bar fills up, but it just sits there on that screen.

Those of you that have it, did this part take long?

Yes. Upwards towards 45mins to an hour. The times displayed on the screen have no resemblance to reality, even when it only says 5 seconds left (about 5 minutes!). :)

The AI can be a little overbearing and short-sighted at times.

There's a simple solution though - a fast car! ;D

Are you guys using a wheel? if so which one? I dont want to get a cheapo one but at the same time I cant afford to stump up for a g25. ::)

Title: Re: Gran Turismo 5...
Post by eno on Nov 26th, 2010 at 6:11am
Big Truck ............. the game needs to connect to the GT5 server to install fully and that is causing slow load and install times as the server is busy.

Craig I'm using the standard game pad ....... I'm loving the acceleration on the right stick as it's so much easier to feed in the power gently off tight corners.

Some of the AI seems to have glue on it ...... you bump it and it sticks to you  :-/

Treated myself to  Logitech Driving Force GT - excellent wheel, retailing for £70-80.

The Logitech Driving Force Pro appears to be pretty much the same, but without the GT branding, and a little cheaper. :)

Yeah after multiple attempts I said screw it, I'll do the full install later.  It doesn't take that long to load a track anyway, and I haven't had any lag issues.

Nice, as long as you fix it to something fairly solid. I use a £10 IKEA kiddies table (once he's in bed!). Good as there a "paddle shift" buttons (not levers like the G25/27, but perfectly good), and the sequential stick too.:)

Well the only thing I don't like so far is when I was installing the game, it was stuck on "3 secs remaining" for 25 minutes! :-X

Anyone else unlocked or bought either of the two WWII vintage military VWs? I've just tried to take the Kubelwagen around the Eiger Nordwand K trail - failing after about 3 minutes due to the appearance of a gentle slope! ;D

Mine said complete and sat there for 45 minutes before I said to heck with it and restarted.  I now play without the install, I hear it isn't much faster at all.  I'll try to install it some other time, but for now I'm happy.

Just a heads-up to anyone who hasn't seen, but apparently PD are releasing 3 "chromeline" cars on Xmas eve to download - including the Jag XJ13, which most users will appreciate for the nigh on impossible historic series! ;D

3hrs til I find out if it's true!

I am 2400 miles from my PS3.  Was it true?  Are they still available?

It was for the Japanese GT market only.  :'(

The only other way to get them was by buying the Signature Edition, which wasn't available in the US market either.

Quite. Shame, isn't it. I'd have hoped PD would have been progressive enough to embrace DLC, just as their competitors, particularly now NFS have moved into more serious territory with "Shift".
