Title: The College Football Thread
Post by BigTruck on Aug 29th, 2010 at 1:11am
Here it is.  Kick off is next weekend.  Drink your beer, tune in your team, and talk smack here.  Bama Tide is going to win the champs, just wanted to throw that out there and end all of your dreams early.  Arguments are encouraged.   8-)  (just keep it civil please, this is SimV still)

Cal has a chance to make the Rose Bowl this year now that USC cant play in any bowl games for the next 2 years!  :D

Just gotta beat Oregon..

Easy week for the Gators.  The spread is 35 over Miami Ohio in The Swamp.

Seminoles get no points over Samford (who?) even though it's a home game.  I guess they're waiting to see what Jimbo Fisher can do before laying odds.

No points for Miami over FAMU even though it's a home game.  That's just insulting.  Miami by 14.

Lucky Bama gets to play Florida twice this year (Oct. 2 and Dec. 4).  I almost hope you win the first one so the Gators can knock you out of national championship contention.

Florida 12-1
Alabama 12-1

Undefeated (again) Boise State routs Ohio State for the national championship!

Both FSU and Miami are playing non-Division 1A schools. Oddsmakers don't make point spreads in such situations.

If the Univ. of Miami can't beat FAMU by more than 14 points, it's going to be a long season in Coral Gables.  :-?

This is almost certainly Bama's year. They've lost a fair bit on Defence, but the depth they have is such that it shouldn't be to much of an negative thing.
Where they do have it interesting is in a rather large screw up by the schedulers, that has left Bama facing SEC opponents for 7 straight weeks and 8 of its last 9 games. No other team has that glitch, add in Penn State, and the tides season is going to be a tough one. If they are going to fall anywhere this season its either going to be @Tennessee or @LSU. If they do win out and go undefeated I can honestly say they would deserve to be national champs.

Bama VS San Jose State for game 1.  And San Jose QB has been talking some bad trash!!!  If Bama swamps them bad enough I will personally drive to San Jose State (it's about 8 minutes from my house) wearing my Bama jersey and do a quick lap through the halls before running for my life.

Here's Penn State's schedule:

* denotes home games.

Youngstown State*
Alabama
Kent State*
Temple*
Iowa
Illinois*
Minnesota
Michigan*
Northwestern*
Ohio State
Indiana
Michigan State*

The general mood up here on campus is one of uncertainty. Both of our QB's this year are inexperienced...so.....

Plus, we're playing our arguably toughest opponent very early (Alabama...obviously) and everyone is kind of hush-hush about that one. I think most people here know that it'll probably be a loss for us. Hopefully we'll at least put up a good fight.

Let them talk trash, this is as close as they will ever get to a national championship as they will get.
They should focus more on trying to beat Bama because there is every possibility that they could, No Ingram, possibly no Marcell Dareus, and a lot of new players. If ever there were a chance to beat a team this is it.
The same will go for Penn state. If they really focus on the football and not the talking, anything can happen.
Once the Tide are settled in and working as a unit in game situations, they will be very tough to stop.

Wow Boise State's proven to me why there the #3 team in the nation.

I dont see how anyone could say they're overrated, look how they're dominating against VT who is ranked 10th in the nation.

Looks to me as if VT is just out there racking up penaltys and making them look like they have no sportsmanship at all. I like this game, its looking like its starting to get rough....remind you of Boise States first game last year....?  :D ;D

its not that i'm not a boise st fan, i just dont believe they deserve the hype they are getting. Both Bama and Ohio state i believe would destroy them.

Title: Re: The College Football Thread
Post by BigTruck on Sep 7th, 2010 at 7:52pm
They need to give Boise a run through the SEC one season, just let them play their entire season against SEC teams.  That would take them down a peg.   ;D

I was also hoping for a VT win.  I didn't get to watch the game, I was on guard duty, but I heard it was really good.

Title: Re: The College Football Thread
Post by Craig. on Sep 7th, 2010 at 8:04pm
I'd like to see that too, same could be said of several teams. The SEC to be honest though is in a bit of a slump, Tenn, LSU, Florida and Auburn are all rebuilding, they showed signs of brilliance last season, but its at least a year or two before the SEC is a real formidable division again.

Title: Re: The College Football Thread
Post by tcco94 on Sep 8th, 2010 at 1:17am
I could see Boise State being in the Pac-10. They even said most of the recruits they get are from California. I dont see why they shouldnt be in the Pac-10? Then they'll be playing good teams- Oregon, Oregon State, USC, Cal...

And in other news....Reggie Bush to get stripped of his 2005 Heisman...
http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5jw2Aa0DoTvWsU544CQIP23xLZ-1wD9I3AVNO3

I think this is stupid. I like what how they punished USC and I think its fair. I dont think its right to take away a Heisman Trophy just because he was getting stuff from USC to be on there team and money etc...It's one thing if you cheat or use performance enhancing drugs but this wasnt the case and I feel like taking away Heisman Trophy isnt worth it. Everything that USC gave Reggie Bush didnt make him a better RB than the other contenders for Heisman. But thats just my thought.

Title: Re: The College Football Thread
Post by Craig. on Sep 8th, 2010 at 8:55am
Was it USC who gave him those things or an independant agent, which I thought??
Either way, I agree, I dont see how any of that deserves taking away from him what he did on the field. Fact is, he went out there week in and week out putting his body and career on the line to earn those rewards.
I've always found it hypocritcal how they work anyway. A player cant accept gifts or money for playing in college, yet every year bowl game players get lumped with thousands off $'s worth of gifts and merchandise they are then expected to carry around and market during the bowl build up. Just like week after week they are expected to be walking billboards for specific sports companies having to wear officially approved attire. These are kids being used to sell stuff, all the while being expected to spend their time studying or practicing, while not getting anything in return.

Title: Re: The College Football Thread
Post by tcco94 on Sep 8th, 2010 at 12:03pm
I think that it was both USC and an agent. Although I totally agree with you, I think the University should be punished if they were using stuff to recruit him because then it makes all the other colleges out there have a lower shot at getting him.

But an award given to a player for how well they did ON the field should not be taken away for rewards he got off the field and when your probably giving a college student the offer to have all those goodies and such, its hard for him to turn it down...at least for me it would be if I was in his shoes. ;D

Saban: Ingram probably won't play

Quote:
Alabama coach Nick Saban said Wednesday that he doesn’t anticipate Heisman Trophy running back Mark Ingram playing Saturday against Penn State.

Saban said Ingram is progressing well from his arthroscopic knee surgery, but that it would be too soon to rush him back out there this weekend without any practice.

It’s not a big surprise that Ingram won’t be out there, certainly not to those inside the Alabama program. The plan all along was to proceed with caution and be absolutely sure he was 100 percent.

And while Ingram may be available to play some against Duke next week, it may be the Arkansas game on Sept. 25 before he’s back in the lineup getting extensive carries.

There’s no reason for the Crimson Tide to gamble with Ingram, not with Trent Richardson and Eddie Lacy holding things down while he’s gone.

If the Tide are going to make a run at another national title, they’re going to need Ingram at his best during that stretch drive.

They can beat beat Penn State and Duke without him.

Title: Re: The College Football Thread
Post by Craig. on Sep 8th, 2010 at 5:32pm
I think LAcy is still the big question mark for Alabama. Is he that good, or was it just San Jose's defence?
If he is that good, I think Ingram needs to get back soon or he could find his carries and draft stock drop like a stone.

With Ingram being out this long, I don't think he will be repeating his H-Man this year.  He may be a contender but I don't think he will get enough field time to rack up the points to get the votes.   :-/

According to Saban, he would be fine this week but they don't want to gamble ruining him further, we'll try Lacy against a tougher opponent and go from there.

I guess they shouldnt gamble to ruin him..makes sense but then its making it harder on him to get the Heisman. Although I doubt thats really on his mind, id rather see him come back healthy than get injured worse.

What I find funny is that everyone has completely forgotten about McElroy. He's unbeaten as a starter since high school. He put up big number last year while only giving up 4 int's last year, and he's looking better this year. Yet no talk of him for the Heisman. He's playing in a pro style offense not some gimmick set, and all this despite two RB's who look set to be 1st or 2nd round picks.

I went to 3 years of home games at Florida and 3 years at Florida State.  Many years ago.

A few years ago I had a client who took me to Miami Hurricanes games in the Orange Bowl.

My time for attending live games is over - too expensive, too hot, too time consuming and they don't even sell overpriced warm beer anymore.

Florida Atlantic is building a stadium on campus and expects to play there next year.  It's almost (not quite) walking distance from home.  Never say never.

Well...I believe we put up a good fight (obviously this will be argued, but I would not consider it a "slaughter"), and overall, the score spread was pretty much what most students here expected.
On to the next games....

We were looking for a 13 point spread in the Bama game so we weren't disappointed.  Penn had a good defense against us, but they kept turning that ball over, I think the game could have been a lot closer than it was...not that I'm complaining!

Michigan had me on the edge though, that last minute of game time was stressing me out...thankfully we took it.  Good day for me, both my teams take home a win!

And how about that VT game  ;D  Now Boise doesn't look so hot.   :D

It's not mutually exclusive.  I have degrees from both schools, first Florida then Florida State.

I went through a Gator hater period when "Crybaby" Steve Spurrier was coach but that's in the past.  Now I just have to hate South Carolina which, curiously, is where I was born.

I can also root for Miami when I have to.

But I love the SEC - and that means Florida.

Is Bama going to chomp Florida?  Unless Florida shapes up real fast, yes.

Gators are gonna get chomped by Bama.  Just sayin.... :D :P

Spurrier needs a kick in the nuts.

To be fair the Bama Penn state game slowed down once bama got the lead. I think Saban's respect for Paterno stopped him putting more points on the board. There were a few drives that the Lions figured out Bama, but there were also drives that I think Bama held themselves back in play selection.
I think Boise states hopes of a national championship just went up in smoke yesterday. They have to hope Ohio state lose a game, because there is no way a 1 loss SEC team is overlooked even for Boise state now.

To be honest, I didnt think the Alabama-Penn State was even gunna be a good matchup. I mean I like the teams playing each other but they made it all hyped up like it was sapose to be a good game.

I think the Notre Dame vs. Michigan game deserved the big hype, and Boise State vs. VT but not Bama-Penn State...

I wouldove taken Bama 9 outta 10 times...but I didnt wanna say anything to soon...because anything could happen.

The history behind the two teams is what made the game special, Joe-Pa used to be real close with Bear Bryant back when the two teams were so called "rivals."  They had not played each other in 38 years, and to this day they still wear the same old school style college football uniforms.  That's what most of the fuss was.

Title: Re: The College Football Thread
Post by SeanTK on Sep 13th, 2010 at 11:47pm
Yeah, it's more of a novelty thing for the press. Trust me, a majority of the students up here aren't too happy with the arrangement. Of course, a year from now we can expect the same media hype when they play PSU at home. (I'll have graduated by then.)
That may be interesting since we have the craziest student section in the country (according to Kirk Herbstreit).

Just as an aside, there's another push to get the stadium named after JoePa before he retires/dies for those interested. Efforts have appeared in the past, but I believe there is a stronger possibility now that Joe's overtaken Bowden record-wise.

Dolphins usually sell out.  I don't know how many people actually attend but they sell out.

Jacksonville Jaguars rarely sell out and, as a result, none of their home games are televised locally.

Buccaneers are party animals.  They sell out and fill the stadium.  It's a pretty cool stadium.

Title: Re: The College Football Thread
Post by Craig. on Sep 18th, 2010 at 7:56pm
I think a lot of it comes down to personal attatchment. A lot of college football fans have either attended or have close ties to people who have attended the college or university they support. Then add in college tickets from what I have seen, are generally cheaper. Its not surprising.
Pro football teams charge stupid amounts for tickets, and outside of the original group of teams, they rarely sell out.
Jacksonville is actually a good example, they for the first time in a while actually sold out a home game last week against Denver. Why? Tim Tebow. The guy played all of 2 snaps, got 2 yards rushing and was the biggest reason for the ticket sales, he's the home town boy, and a big reason florida was such a great university team and that loyalty brought in the fans.
The other thing is the atmosphere in the stadiums. Some places in college, (Alabama, LSU, Florida, Texas Ohio State) I would hate to have to play in as a visiting team, you cant hear a thing on the field. Some NFL stadiums can be sellouts and yet they are virtually silent, (New England, San Diego,  Cinnci and so on) It just seems the NFL wants to discourage atmosphere.

Average Penn State game here today against Kent State. We're still pretty sloppy, so we have a bit of work to do before we hit the reasonable opponents in the Big-10. We play Temple next week (another yawner probably, although Temple DID beat UConn....)

Also went to Penn State's Women's Volleyball game today. THAT was great! They achieved a 109 game winning streak before unfortunately losing a couple weeks ago. Don't fear our football team, fear our Women's Volleyball team!

It is a really cool experience though. It feels very personal because you can very easily get seats court-side if you want. We opted for just a couple rows up so we didn't get stepped on or have the ball spiked on us (it's CLOSE!). Truly an excellent sporting experience. And between the high probability of having a volleyball hit you in the face, and the fact that it's women's volleyball.....it kept us awake!  ;D ;)

OK, back on topic....  ;)

Last quarter, 28-14, we need a miracle.  As I was typing this, we SCORED!!!!  We still need the other half of that miracle, but we're getting there!!  28-21.

Still to come:

#12 LSU at #14 Florida (Florida by 7)

#23 Florida State at #13 Miami (Miami by 5.5)

The SEC standings will be interesting.  All we know for sure is that Alabama is now in third place in the SEC West.  Florida could take over #1 in the East.

After all the vomiting, crying, and self destruction, we have decided to keep following Bama.  Rated at #8 we have some work to do, but this weekend will be a big decider on where we stand.  Keep rolling Tide!!

I have switched my allegiance to Michigan State.  I went to both Michigan and State so I am allowed to do that.  I am anxious to see where they go this year.

We have a lot of work indeed, but I dont think the national championship is out of the window just yet, with so many ranked opponents on the schedule, a convincing few wins over them, a destroying of auburn and a good win in the SEC championship game should be enough to sway voters, as for the BCS itself, the schedule alone should be enough to keep them near the top.
I just find it harsh that a team loses one game to a tough divisional opponent, has been considered the best for ages,  is dropped to number 8. I thought that was a bit harsh. I was expecting maybe 5.

Let's Go Wisconsin!!!!  (I hate Ohio State)

The Michigan lost to Iowa, 38-28.  Hope they can still get a good bowl game this year.

Michigan State should make top ten this week, yes I'm optimistic  ;D

Auburn game is ridiculously high scoring.  It's a touchdown fest there.

Bama game starts in 2 hours, but so does the Red Wings game, so I will be upstairs in the cave watching my WIngs while the wife shouts updates to me for the Bama game.

The last time the Florida Gators  lost three straight regular-season games was October 1988, when they fell to Memphis State, Vanderbilt and Auburn. How long ago was that? Here are some other things that happened in 1988.

*The most famous player on that Florida team was Emmitt Smith, now an NFL Hall of Famer and the league's all-time leading rusher. He was a sophomore.

*Galen Hall was the Florida's head coach. Steve Spurrier wouldn't become head coach for another two seasons.

* Ronald Reagan was president.

*The five films nominated for Best Picture that year were The Accidental Tourist, Dangerous Liaisons, Mississippi Burning, Rain Man and Working Girls, Rain Man, which starred Tom Cruise and Dustin Hoffman, won. Many sports fans would say the best movie that year, though, was Bull Durham, starring Kevin Costner, Susan Sarandon and Timothy Robbins. Sarandon and Robbins were not yet married. Die Hard came out that year, too.

*The Dodgers won the World Series over the Oakland A's. That was the World Series in which Kirk Gibson hit a ninth-inning, two-run homer in Game 1 to win.

* Phil Collins' "Groovy Kind of Love" was No. 1on the Billboard Hot 100 chart on Oct. 29. The week before it had been UB 40's Red, Red Wine. The week after it was The Beach Boys' Kokomo.

* Nintendo released Tecmo Bowl.

*In an October vice-presidential debate, GOP candidate Dan Quayle of Indiana insisted he had as much experience as Jack Kennedy had when he was elected president. Democratic candidate Lloyd Bentsen of Texas replied "Senator, I knew Jack Kennedy. I served with Jack Kennedy. Jack Kennedy was a friend of mine. Senator, you're no Jack Kennedy."

* Tim Tebow was one year old.

* Urban Meyer was 24 years old and linebackers coach at Illinois State University. He wouldn't get his first head coaching job for 13 more years.

*Barry Sanders was on his way to winning the Heisman Trophy at Oklahoma State.

*Roseanne premiered on ABC. Magnum PI was in its final season.

* Barack Obama was preparing to enter law school at Harvard.

* Mike Tyson was heavyweight champion of the world.

* Nirvana, with singer Kurt Cobain, had not yet released its first album. It did that in 1989.

* Mikhail Gorbachev is named head of the Supreme Soviet.

*The Saturday night live cast included Dana Carvey, Jon Lovitz, Dennis Miller and Phil Hartman.

*Kansas' Danny Manning was the first pick of the NBA draft by the L.A. Clippers. The Miami Heat took Syracuse's Rony Seikaly ninth. The Orlando Magic did not exist.

Should be an easy enough win for Alabama.
From a fan point of view though, the LSU Auburn game couldn't have come at a worse time for bama, With both being ranked so high and undefeated, beating both would have put bama right back near the top, now one of those two teams will be much lower ranked when they face off.

They do not play head to head in regular season.

According to ESPN Michigan State leads the Big 10/11, being undefeated in conference play and undefeated overall.

Ohio State and Wisconsin both have one conference loss and one overall loss.

on the plus side it was a good result from a bama point of view, two more teams ahead of them drop with losses. Oregon have a toughy as well. The national championship isn't out of sight just yet.
Some have bowl predictions as being Oregon bama for the national champ. I'd like to see boise state bama personally.

I do hope they get a difficult season one year, if they are as good as people say then they should prove it.
Virginia tech was their toughest opponent and they barely beat them. The rest have basically been no name walks in the park.
Though in fairness TCU have had it even easier, though I think Utah today may give them a wake up call.

Not really true, you cant forget Oregon State and upcoming Nevada on their schedule. I mean yeah they aren't playing SEC teams but still everyone says they need to "prove" that they can be #1 or #2 but they stilll beat VT, and Oregon State...both top 25 teams and they still have to play Fresno State and Hawaii...who aren't great teams but still a good competitor. Its not there fault for the conference their in...

Alabama is somewhere between 3rd and 5th place in the SEC West.

WOOHOO!

That's right Webb!

Victory #400 for JoePa, and I watched it happen in the Penn State student section this afternoon!  :) :)
A rough start, but after we switched QB's (and talked some sense into our play-calling staff)  it turned into a great game!  ;)

I know most here couldn't care less about Penn State football, and yes I know we're not very good this year, BUT it was so great to be part of the experience. In addition to being in the student section, we ended up specifically in what's called the "S-Zone", which is a subset of the senior section that wears special shirts to form an "S" in the stands! Truly amazing!

WE ARE ..........  PENN STATE!    ;)

AP Source: Miami fires coach Randy Shannon

Quote:
CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) — A person familiar with the decision tells The Associated Press that Miami fired coach Randy Shannon on Saturday, hours after the Hurricanes finished a 7-5 regular season.

The fate of all members of Shannon's staff has not been determined, according to the person, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the university is not announcing the move until Sunday. Some, if not all, will remain for Miami's bowl game.

Shannon received a four-year extension just before the start of the 2010 season. He was 28-22 in four seasons at Miami.

Miami athletic director Kirby Hocutt, who made the decision on Shannon's fate, did not return calls and text messages seeking comment. Hocutt made the decision shortly after Miami lost to South Florida 23-20 in overtime on Saturday afternoon, in a game where only about 27,000 people filled the 73,000 seats at Sun Life Stadium.

I've been expecting this.  I thought giving a mediocre coach a 4 year contract was pretty stupid.

The NCAA doesn't have football playoffs because they would lengthen the season too much and take athletes away from their studies.  They are impractical for fans too - no one would know who would play, or when, or where.  Seems to work OK in Div II and III though.

Hardly a surprise. He lost the key parts of what made Florida as good as they were, that has shown in the results. He was thinking of retiring last season anyway, but I still think was forced back into it.
The sad fact is, the "Denver Tebows" are creaming their undies at the thought he might come and coach there so their golden boy can play.
I for one pray that doesn't happen or I quit after being a Bronco's fan for 20+ years.

Texas defensive coordinator Will Muschamp is new Florida coach

Quote:
GAINESVILLE - Florida Today has learned that Texas defensive coordinator Will Muschamp has been hired as the new head football coach at the University of Florida.

The Associated Press is also reporting that Muschamp has been hired, citing a source.

Muschamp, who is a 15-year coaching veteran who joined the Longhorns' staff in 2008, will replace Urban Meyer after his sudden resignation on Wednesday. An official announcement is expected shortly from Florida.

Earlier in the day, there was a report Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops was finalizing a deal with the Gators. Stoops denied the rumor.

Muschamp, a Georgia native, had originally agreed to be the coach in waiting and resume the head coaching position at Texas when Mack Brown decides to retire.

Muschamp is considered one of the nation's premier defensive coordinators and was a 2007 Broyles Award Finalist (nation's top assistant coach). He joined the Longhorns' after spending the previous two years as defensive coordinator at Auburn.

In his five years as a coordinator at Auburn and LSU, Muschamp's defenses ranked among the nation's top 10 in total defense five times and scoring defense three times, while ranking in the top 15 in scoring defense the other two.

Not a bad choice. I would have preferred someone with head coaching experience (specifically Chris Petersen), but I think Muschamp will do very well here. And if he doesn't, well, he won't last long. ;)

BTW, Cam Newton won the Heisman in what was a surprise to no one.

Honestly I think I'm going to Go State...I love the Tide and I love the Spartans, but I have to go for the underdog.  Bama is going to crush them.  So if for some crazy Cousins pulls a game out his ass and wins I can rub it in my wifes face...just before I pack my sleeping bag and tent.

Then again, if the Tide win, I win... and probly win that night too.   ;)

Win Win or Lose Lose... ;D >:(

Overtime!

North Carolina 20
Tennessee 20

Mediocre SEC team and mediocre ACC team play sloppy and manage to tie after 60 minutes.

Currently 27-27 in OT.

(Safe move BigTruck.  'Bama is going to clobber Michigan State)

Bad day to be a Michigan boy.  The one and only game this year that I actually wanted Bama to lose, and they destroy us.  Then Miss State laughed at my Wolverines all the way to the end zone.  Then the Badgers fall out of the Rose Bowl.

Sigh...Roll Tide I guess.   ::)

Whelp, that time of year again.  Michigan kicked butt and looked great with their new coach.  Alabama won of course (Roll Tide!) but they played really sloppy.  Florida State is a contender for the BCS this year, very nice for you Webb!  Couple of upsets so far today, Baylor beat TCU (hahaha that game was fun to watch) and BYU upset Ole Miss.  Notre Dame is looking to get upset too, not over yet though.  ;)

Cold beer, grilled burgers, college football.  I love Saturdays again!

Florida and Florida State took the easy way out and played creampuffs.

In the SEC Auburn won but lost by 25 against the spread.

LSU is looking very good against Oregon at the start of the 4th.

Don't forget Miami and Maryland on Monday night.

If you were going to watch Miami at Maryland you might want to make alternative plans.  As soon as I hear "weather delay" I'm out for the night.

National Weather Service

Tonight: Rain. The rain could be heavy at times. Low around 64. South wind 6 to 9 mph becoming west. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New rainfall amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible.

Worst team in the country?  FAU

Quote:
The NCAA statistical rankings establish what was already clear to FAU fans: The Owls have the worst offense in the country.

FAU is last of the 120 teams in the Football Bowl Subdivision with an average of 92.5 yards per game. FAU is the only team averaging less than 100 yards, and one of three averaging less than 200.

FAU is also last in passing offense (66.5 yards per game) and rushing offense (26 yards per game). The Owls are also last in third down conversions (2-of-23 or 8.7 percent) and first downs (12).

The defense is also near the bottom, as that unit is ranked No. 105 in total defense, allowing 451 yards per game, and No. 114 in scoring defense, with opponents averaging 42.5 points per game.

Coach Howard Schnellenberger did not have any answers Saturday for why his team played so poorly in a 44-0 loss to Michigan State where the Owls had one first down and a record-low 48 yards of offense.

They should get a "killer owl" for a mascot.

Sunshine State Blues: No Florida schools in the AP Top 25 for 1st time since 1982

Quote:
MIAMI — Florida is out of The Associated Press Top 25 poll.

Not just the Gators — the entire state.

For the first time since Dec. 6, 1982, no Sunshine State team was among the AP rankings on Sunday, marking the end of 472 straight polls where either Florida, Florida State or Miami — and usually all three — were on the list. Florida and Florida State both lost Saturday, the Gators losing at No. 1 LSU 41-11 and the Seminoles continuing their freefall with a 35-30 setback at Wake Forest.

On the positive side:

The Jets lost on Sunday.
The Dolphins did not lose on Sunday.
There is a 99% probability that the Dolphins will not lose next Sunday.

On the negative side:

Miami at North Carolina
Florida at Auburn
Florida State at Duke

Three more disasters waiting to happen.

Mich VS Mich State.  Ugly game, crappy officials, two State TD's shouldn't have been then they got rough and injured Robinson.  Lame.  I like bothteams but State showed poor sportsmanship, especially when they taunted during a TD.

Bama...well you know the drill.  Tide Rolled!

I bet alot of people missed that game last night due to the World Series game. I rarely pick baseball over football...but last night's game was amazing. On the bright side though...I started Case Keenum last night as they killed Rice 73-34...passed for 534 yds and 9 td's....most fantasy points by a QB this season.  :D Maybe that will bump him into the top 5 for Heisman as he's close to it anyways.

That's why they rank teams after they play.  FSU should have won all it's games and be #1 but it isn't.

Alabama has a loss but is still ranked above Stanford and Boise State.  It is #4 in the AP but #3 in the BCS.

What kind of break do you expect - #1 because you could have won?

Title: Re: The College Football Thread
Post by tcco94 on Nov 10th, 2011 at 1:56am
Boise State will never get the credit they deserve until they move to a different conference and start playing real teams more.

They need to go the Pac-12!! Since they get most of their recruits from California it'd only make sense. Although I love the Pac-12 so of course I'd suggest that. It's to bad the Pac-12 wont expand anymore though.

LOL No I was saying the rest of the team is in first place, as in if the kicker were any good we would have won.

As for the break, I'm saying we should still be number two, especially since the loss was an overtime loss, and the game was between 1 and 2.  Bama is still the second best football team, even if those other teams are undefeated.  If they were to play Bama we would beat them, almost certain.

Either way, it is what it is.  Go Oregon this weekend.  Need Stanford to lose and OK State to lose.   8-)

Meyer Agrees To Coach Buckeyes, Building Staff

Quote:
Multiple sources close to the Ohio State football program have confirmed that Urban Meyer is assembling a coaching staff after agreeing to become the next head football coach at Ohio State.

The deal between Meyer and Ohio State was consumated in principle earlier this week in Columbus but not signed. It includes a multi-year contract that will make Meyer once again one of college football’s highest paid coaches.

In additon to Meyer’s generous compensation package, sources said a major factor in the coach’s decision to agree to take the position was the school promising him the budget to assemble what is expected to become the highest-paid assistant coaching staff in college football history ...

There must have been some major medical breakthroughs since he retired for health reasons 2 years ago.

The NCAA needs to take back control of their own program from the BCS and devise a simple but fair tournament; one that  doesn't use coaches votes or intricate computer programs to determine what two teams vie for the National Championship.
Most of all, it needs to get rid of the BCS "Committee", the group of money hungry, backroom side deal boosters who don't have the best interests of the Football Program, the schools or the players in mind.

Tiger Woods named honorary captain for Fiesta Bowl

Quote:
Tiger Woods will serve as an honorary captain for the Stanford football team in its Fiesta Bowl game against Oklahoma State on Jan. 2, Woods said Thursday on his web site.

“Cardinal head coach David Shaw asked me to be an honorary team captain, and I happily accepted,” Woods said. “For Coach Shaw to think highly enough of me to be involved in the game and be able to talk to his kids is very special.”

Woods spent two years at Stanford, where he was a two-time first-team All-American. He won the NCAA individual championship in 1996 and was named the Jack Nicklaus Player of the Year before turning pro later that year.

“I’m very close to Stanford,” Woods said. “They’ve done so much for me in my life. Everyone knows Coach Shaw and I had a class together. We go way back. It’s neat to be able to come back and help him any way that I can.”

Woods will open his 2011 season at the Abu Dhabi Championship, which is the same week as the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines.

“I’ve been to Dubai quite a few times, but never to Abu Dhabi,” Woods said. “I’m looking forward to the experience.”

Woods recently ended a two-year winless drought with a victory at the Chevron World Challenge, where he birdied his final two holes to beat Zach Johnson by a stroke. He has not yet said where he will begin his 2012 PGA TOUR season.

After party!!!

I defiantly agree that they need a new tournament but they have no control on how long a game takes to play...

Start the games on time.  4:00 means 4:00, not 4:20.

Minimize the commercial timeouts.

Halftime is supposed to be 20 minutes.  Don't tack on an extra 10 minutes for commercials as soon as the players come back on the field.

Don't need to review every single freaking play!!!

December 22 - Las Vegas Bowl

Arizona State (6-6)
Boise State (11-1)

Wow, lose one game and get demoted from a possible national championship to a bowl no one ever heard of. Boise State can take consolation in the fact that it's a 14 point favorite.

ROLL TIDE!!  Haters gonna hate, but that was a good game.  I appreciate a good defensive battle.  The best part was the fact that LSU didn't pass the 50 yard line but once, and after they did they got pushed back behind it.  Shows you who should have won the first battle.

"Nobody wants to see that happen." - Tennessee coach Derek Dooley

South Carolina RB Marcus Lattimore is out for the year with a knee injury

Quote:
South Carolina star Marcus Lattimore was taken to a hospital and is out indefinitely because of an injury to his right knee suffered against Tennessee on Saturday.

Lattimore was running through the left side when he was struck around the knees by Volunteers defensive back Eric Gordon, Lattimore's right leg whipping around and slamming against the turf. South Carolina trainers immediately rushed to his side, keeping Lattimore flat on his back as the junior attempted to sit up and see the injury.

Lattimore was taken off the field on a cart and went to the hospital for further evaluation. Gamecocks coach Steve Spurrier didn't give details of the injury, only that it was every bit as devastating as the one to Lattimore's left knee last fall at Mississippi State. Lattimore had surgery to repair ligaments and cartilage, then needed six months of rehabilitation and recovery before he was cleared to return to action ...

"Likely knee injury"?  He's out for at least the rest of the year and this may be the end of his playing career.

Nick Saban's Comments About Florida, BCS Bowl Berth Smack of Hypocrisy

Quote:
With Florida sitting in the No. 4 spot in the latest BCS Standings, the loser of Saturday night's SEC Championship Game between No. 2 Alabama and No. 3 Georgia will likely fall behind the one-loss Gators in the final BCS Standings.

Essentially, the loser of the SEC Championship Game would be getting punished while Florida will be rewarded, despite not winning its division.

Saban isn't too high on the prospect of the loser getting jumped by Florida, according to the Palm Beach (Fla.) Post.

It’s not really a great scenario. You play your way into the (SEC) championship game, which means you’re the best team in your division. It doesn’t seem quite right, but it is what it is. I don’t really know what me commenting about it is going to do to change it. But I don’t feel good about it.

So Saban doesn't think it's right to play in the BCS this year without winning your division?

It didn't seem to be an issue last season, when his Crimson Tide played in the BCS National Championship Game.

Stay classy, Nick!   [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel has won the Heisman Trophy, becoming the first freshman to win college football's most prized individual award.

The redshirt freshman beat out Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te'o and Kansas State quarterback Collin Klein.

A few days after turning 20, Manziel became the most inexperienced player to win the Heisman. Adrian Peterson had come closest as a freshman, finishing second to Southern California quarterback Matt Leinart in 2004.

Manziel is the second player from Texas A&M to win the Heisman, and first since John David Crow 1957.

Manziel broke 2010 Heisman winner Cam Netwon's Southeastern Conference record with 4,600 total yards this season, led the Aggies to a 10-2 in their first SEC season and orchestrated an upset at No. 1 Alabama in November that stamped him as legit.

The Gators are getting their butts handed to them.

Louisville 30, Florida 10 in the third quarter.

Good thing Florida is a 4th quarter team!

I would have posted earlier but I just got back from NYC.  Watched the game from Times Square.  What a great game for us Bama fans.  I know the rest of the country was sleeping lol.  Two blowouts in a row.  Let's go for a three-peat next year in Pasadena!!  Roll Tide!
