Title: Been under a different rock (need good downloads)
Post by machineman9 on Mar 27th, 2010 at 1:41pm
So I've had FSX for a few years but for whatever reason my computer refuses to run it properly. I've asked about it, I've spent many hours trying to fix it, but the end result is that it just no longer wants to work.

So I am getting FS2004 but as I have been away from the game for so long, I am not sure what the best addons are for it anymore.

Could someone point me in the right direction of the latest and greatest of the following?
Any environment packs (textures, clouds, sun, snow, bloom etc)
Good quality aircraft. I know there's a lot to choose from but prop aircraft and modern military aircraft are always quite good. Any particular developers to look out for?
Any decent scenery, the actual models this time. Preferably around Europe or North West United States.

Any reccomendations at all are appreciated. I'm going through the SimV downloads section myself anyway, but if you have any real gems to point out, I'm willing to listen.

Cheers

I'm far from an expert, but...
Holger Sandman's Glacier Bay and his Columbia River Gorge are really good. As are HDE clouds. Oh yeah, any of Kenny Fox's scenery if you like small GA airports, all on SimV. Shane has a good combination of water but I don't remember the file name right now. I think it is on our server though. As to aircraft, anything by Milton Shupe or Lynn & Bill Lyons is a must. I'm sure others will have good advice for you as well. Good luck.  :)

Well there are an awful lot of quality downloads out there and right now the SimV servers are probably feeling the burn from that little fact. I'm downloading rather a lot  :o

Thanks for the reccomendations so far. I've got the HDE clouds just recently downloaded so I can pop those in when the game arrives but the others aren't familiar to me so I shall check those out.

A scenery list would be much appreciated. There's a huge backlog of downloads waiting to go which should mean I rarely get bored.

Thanks very much. I hope to get some shots up soon providing it all runs smoothly.

Of course, as you know, the mesh and texture addons are the most important.
Pablo Diaz did a brilliant environment upgrade

At flightsim.com:
Name: hde.zip Size: 20,185,381 Date: 09-24-2009 Downloads: 6,622
FS2004 HDE - High Definition Environment. High definition and photorealistic texture pack that will change the aspect of your clouds (cumulus, stratus, cirrus), sky color, aircraft reflections and ground detail. By Pablo Diaz.

(Some have found a performance hit with the highest-def)

and also well worth the look:
Name: hmprog.zip Size: 119,098,545 Date: 06-28-2009 Downloads: 3,736
FS2004 Howard's Mix The FSX Experience. Extreme Graphics makeover update, includes a texture swap program. Howard's Mix will move our trusted FS2004 into this century with new ground water clouds/sky enhanced environmental files. All default building have been upgraded. Trees completely redrawn with static birds added. Professional quality installer on main program. Revised 09. By Howard Smith. (See also HMDOCS.ZIP) (Previous version had 2159 downloads)

My sim is now a mishmosh of different textures, payware and free, and never stays the same...

Title: Re: Been under a different rock (need good downloads)
Post by Opa on Mar 31st, 2010 at 1:20pm
Just a word of Caution  if you audtion Howard's Mix.

Install it to a temporary folder first!

Then check to see exactly what it will be putting and where and then backup those files and folders which will be affected.

HM will overwrite your default files and if you do not like the results and have not made a backup first, you will need to do a lot of restoring from the original install disks.

Too many folks found that out the hard way.

Title: Re: Been under a different rock (need good downloads)
Post by WingZ on Mar 31st, 2010 at 6:05pm
David you're right of course - I would never unzip anything straight into the sim - first have a look what's there.
But I long ago stopped backing up original texture files ;) they're on the install disks for goodness sakes!
There are so many variations freeware and pay- that I have never gone back, only ever forward.
I have no idea what's in my sim, only that I (quite often) like what I see!
Next week this will again be a different story as I once again fiddle with something that ain't broke...

There was indeed some of Howard's Mix I didn't like - I immediately dropped a dozen other textures over those bits, and then some others for good measure!
The only drawback is that when I put up a screenshot when the sim looks good, I can't answer the question "How did you get it looking like that?"  :-?

I've just reinstalled FS9 on my laptop, and I haven't flown FS9 for awhile so I was wondering what are the best freeware addons for FS9, scenery, aircraft, textures....

If you could post them here it would save me a few hours of searching and downloading. ;D

3.Aircraft see this thread- http://205.252.250.26/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1230865071 (alot of payware mentioned, but some great free ones also)
and if VC's are not manditory for you, this link is for ALL of Mike Stone's airplanes in one zip file: http://fsfiles.org/PA/index.php?act=view&id=13 (127 planes in all! )

VOZ 1.8 (kinda like FTX for FS9, 600mb zip file)

There's probably a thousand more to mention, but I feel these are the most critical for what you requested.

And now for three aircraft recommendations:

Two on this page:

And the last one:

A must have if you enjoy flying in the Aloha state. Having lived in this area, I can vouch for the accuracy of the improved Waikiki Beach area.

To find the sceneries, click on the FS2004 link on the very top center of the page, and scroll through to see what's available. Clicking the download button will open up a new page with more info about the individual sceneries.
I currently only have their Hawaii scenery, and it's pretty nice. Was thinking about getting Tokyo too.

Any Milton Shupe aircraft:

Dassault Falcon 50 with all 2004 updates:
-Go to www.wspilots.com
-Go to their downloads section
-Enter the FS9 - Jets category
-Go to page 3 of that category. The aircraft is a tri-engine private jet, by Eric Dantes, should be the fourth image down the page.

SCS Tupolev Tu-134 version 1.0:
http://rapidshare.com/files/89097730/SCS-Tu-134-v1.0.0.zip

The aircraft is indeed freeware, but their home site has been down for months. Support for the aircraft is provided in the Project Tupolev forums:
http://www.protu-154.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=24&sid=7b8994ba89570095243cd41f05...

Nemeth Designs helicopters:

North American F-86E/F Sabre
sf86ef.zip

I think that is all of it as far as aircraft goes now. I'll send you updates if there is anything that I forgot about that is worth your or my time to use.

With that said though, there is another special link that contains one of my favorite aircraft, and what I would consider to be my #1 scenery, based on how much there is to explore:

http://www.m-r-software.de/

The links to the Britten-Norman Islander series should be obvious, but there is also an excellent scenery package for the Frisian Islands off the coast of Germany:
Click on the Ostfriesland link on the left sidebar, and download both the Ostfriesland and Helgoland packages. They are definitely worth your while!

Ravang, hopefully my list provided you with a few aircraft that are "off the beaten path" in cyberspace, so to speak. A few real gems in there that not many people seem to be aware of.
I of course included some of the more well known stuff in my list, but if you really look through thoroughly, I can guarantee that you will find some top quality stuff that you have never tried before!

For everything else, look through Shane's link in the post above.

Just a couple urls but these are the best of the best and no
junk really but depending on how much your lap top can handle.http://www.premaircraft.com/ Premair is really QUALITY
spelled wrong. Ya gotta get some of their aircraft.http://www.bobholland.com/fs/default.htm Old Bob has a
ton of stuff to learn and add. Real easy to understand too.  As far as
scenery, check here at Simviation or AVSIM and look for the authors, Milton Shupe, and David "Opa" Marshall. Every bit of their work is
the best.
::)

Title: Re: Must Have Addons?
Post by SeanTK on Apr 11th, 2009 at 7:40pm
PAD's stuff is alright...

They are lacking systems complexity and are more for a get up and go user base who are just beginning to explore FS addons, but they provide a reasonable Do-228, Mu-2, and Shorts series. Not top quality by any means when compared to most other aircraft, but better than most people could do, and still nice representations of those aircraft! All in all, I would suggest grabbing the Shorts series aircraft from them first and foremost, but in my opinion, you can find better representations of the DHC-6 series and DHC-8 series through Eric Dantes, and Dreamwings, respectively.
:)

I have already mentioned Shupe's great addons in a previous post in this thread. Keep on the lookout at the end of this month for a new Beechcraft A28 Destroyer/XA-38 Grizzly by Shupe and others.

I'm pretty sure that the best aircraft addon is SectionF8's F-86. It puts all other FS2004 military aircraft to shame, and there are over 160 downloadable skins for it ranging from USAF textures to SriLankan textures. A thoroughly amazing aircraft.

I've been "flying" mostly FSX lately, but there are a couple of aircraft that only work in FS9, so I have kept it around. I'll throw in a few payware items.

REX (for FS9) is really nice.

Ultimate Terrain USA, Canada & Alaska add different views.

Ground Environment Pro also adds a different view.

Traffic is a real nice AI add on.

American Champion Aircraft by Real Air (Citabria, Decathalon & Scout) is a high quality aircraft program which includes  stunt to bush planes (for both FS9 & FSX on same disk or download. Both work great)

Cessna 162 Skycatcher by Abacus (yeah, yeah, I know... they got this right though) It's a low & slow plane but the Garmin G300 glass panel (abbreviated version of the G1000) is completely operational in FS9, but not FSX

Diamond DA 40 Star TDI also by Abacus (again, they seemed to have gotten this one right also). It's low & slow with the option of a fully functional Garmin G1000 glass panel or analog panel. Again, it's completely operational in FS9, but not FSX.

Piper PA 28 236 Dakota by Carenado is only for FS9, but looks and "flies" very nicely

Also, many of the new Carenado products have FS9 version aircraft. They are mostly single engine aircraft, but they do have some RGs, and a twin (or 2).

North American P 51 D Mustang by A2A is really nice aircraft (for FS9 & FSX on the same download).

One thing that is a bit hard to get used to (again), is that the "mixture" in FS9 has to be clicked & dragged or rolled by the mouse instead of using the mix throw on the throttle quadrant. The throttle and prop throws still work from the quadrant though. Well, you should have good push start now...

Semper Fi,

Dave

I have driven over the Columbia River Gorge multiple times. I am always blasted away looking at it. Where can I get the scenery, please?

Good evening fellow simmers.  I have been away for awhile, yet lurking at the same time :D...tonight I was curious to see how well my laptop would run fs9 and I was surprised and wondering why I havent tried it sooner after my gaming computer died.  On that computer I was running FSX with loads of add-ons.  With me out of the flight sim scene I am wondering what are the best looking and latest scenery addons and textures?  I hope to soon have some pics to post that will be up to the caliber of what I use to post.
thank you in advance for all advice. 8-)

Does anyone know of any good freeware FS2004 or FSX roads?  Along with any good freeware land vehicles?

There are some pretty good REX freeware roads but I don't advise you to download the Grass if so.
And there is a Lexus and Bmw and Ferrari and a few others if you look ;).

I have been away for awhile.  Thanks so much for this thread!!  Lots of great downloads!!  I tend to go with FS9 even though I do have FSX.  FS9 allows for so much more in terms of editing panels, gauge selection, etc.  I keep worrying about my memory usage, LOL, last time I checked I have used less that half of what is available!  I am going to have to find away to deal with the number of aircraft I have as the wait time for FS9 to finish loading everything has become an issue.  LOL

Can any one tell me why some downloads are so slow.  I am trying to download the EC135_EXT4 and the download rate is less that 36 bpm.  What the hay!  As a paying member, I was under the impression that downloads would be somewhat faster.  Not over an hour!!!  :-/
