It doesn't matter if you dream of owning your very own Pitts Special, SR-71 Blackbird or even an Airbus A380, list it below:

I'll start! If I could own any plane it would be a...North American F-86 Sabre, preferably in bare aluminium. :D

I would love to have a Howard 500. My grandfather used to have one (he sold it before I was born), and I've loved it since I flew the Milton Shupe one for FS2004.

Edit: I'll go ahead and put my favorite from each category.
GA Plane: Already have a 185 on floats, Piper Cub, and Ryan SCW, so I'll go with a Cessna 195.
Business Jet: Citation X
Airliner: 727-200
Turboprop: Pilatus PC-12 or PC-21
Fighter - Piston: Also already have a P-51, so I'll go with a Hawker Sea Fury.
Fighter - Jet: Want an F-22, but I'll stick with aircraft possible to get, so... either a Harrier or F-104.
Bush Plane: Fiesler Storch

Those things are worth mega $$$$! Very rare too!

My pretty little Cessna 150 Aerobat would suit all my touring needs, with the minimum of expense in hangarage, maintenance, and running costs... [smiley=tekst-toppie.gif]...!

I'd like a Spitfire but failing that a Tiger Moth would do nicely. I'd even settle for a little RV-8. ;)

Tutor for light prop
Tucano for turbo prop
Baron 58 for multi-engine
Edge 540 for specifically aerobatic
Eurofighter for off-the-scale coolness and jet engine.

Good evening... :)

Best dang Bush and Light Utility Aeroplane in the world.

A DeHavilland of Canada DHC-3 single radial engine Otter on amphibious floats and done up inside as a flying camper.

It would have to be painted fire engine red and be sitting on jet black amphibious floats.

HMMM....wonder if I could sell the old girl, all the children and grandchildren?   :o   ::)

Cheers...Happy Landings...Doug

I really enjoyed the righthand seat of a Cessna 210 a number of times years ago.

There is a company in the US that is overhauling airframes and avionics on older 210's and I'd look there first but I do occassionally look around the used market.

I could get a reasonable one for US$230,000---if I HAD US$230,000 of course. :(

GA: An Extra 300 would be fun.  ;)
Business: Tough choice... Probably a Citation X. Looks decent, goes fast, fair amount of room
Airliner: Tu-144! Amazing plane!

Military:
WWI: Fokker Dr.I! Who wouldn't want to think of themselves as the Red Baron? ;D
WWII: Really tough choice here. It'd come down to the FW-190, P-38, P-47 F4U, or Me-262. More leaning towards the FW-190, P-38 or F4U.

Cold War: F-86. No questions!
Vietnam: F-104, F-8, or MiG-21!
Post-Nam: SR-71, F-16, A-10, F-15, Su-27, Su-35, Su-37, Su-47, MiG-29, MiG-35, MiG-31, Etc :P

Oh, and a C-17 would be pretty nifty too... :-X

My dad flew one of those WWI planes in France a long time ago, and he said they were absolutely awful. He couldn't imagine what it would be like to fly it in battle.

There is a gentleman who has a hangar here with the perfect combination of aircraft.

Baron 55 to travel with the wife
L-2 for those slow, cheap days
Teamrocket F-1 Evo, for the days you want to play fighter pilot or take trips solo.

Being the "Captain Sensible" that I am, and being well aware of the extortionate cost of owning and operating an Aeroplane;
as an alternative to my choice of the Cessna 150 Aerobat, I would choose the Thruster 600N Microlight/Ultralight, for reasonably affordable aerial transport!

Anything more exotic is purely in the mind of "Dreamers"...

...trust me... ;)...!

Most private, General Aviation Pilots don't have two Cents to rub together, holes in their shoes, and the arse out of their trousers!... :'(...!

I think that's the whole point of this topic Captain Sensible. If you had unlimited amounts of cash what aircraft would you like to own?

I couldn't afford to own any type of aeroplane, never mind a Spitfire, but everyone is allowed to dream. :P 8-)

Maybe a 777-200LR for a private jet; less time on the ground having to refuel.
I'd quite like a Mil Mi-24, for fun.
I would quite like to fly a Lightning as well, pretty fast!

Supersonic: Concorde. Not offered commercially; spacious compared to Blackbird or Foxbat; smaller than Tu-144 but quieter and longer ranged, and still more spacious than any Gulfstream.

Widebodies - a VIP A380 and a Tristar 500

A longhaul business jet for smaller airports - Dassault Falcon 7X

And a bush plane - Y-5. As an An-2 version, it is spacious, STOL and still in production. For An-2 decently furnished, see those:

Concorde is/was a beautiful piece of machinery but not very practical as a private bizjet. For a start, there are very few places you would be allowed to land or take off from.

WWII: Spitfire or P-51D
Modern Military: F-18 (Oh yeah, Hoping to fly one of these when I become a pilot in the RAAF)

How many civil airports stock the special fuel of Blackbird?

At least Concorde uses almost off-the-shelf airport infrastructure (I think runway surfaces must be checked for smoothness).

But yes, airports unreachable by Concorde may get something quieter, like A380 or Falcon 7X.

Nice, though -700/BBJ1 has almost as much space, and slightly longer range.

Advantages shared by Tu-160.

BTW, for estimate of CRJ/Glex interior size see

A Concorde is roughly as wide (very slightly wider).

Hmmmm several aircraft for several purposes I suppose...

I always though that should I ever win the lottery i would buy a PBY - Catalina amphibian and circumnavigate the world in it! It was one of the planes my grandfather flew on in the war.

For tearing it up through the mountains..... my no1 choice would be a P-51 mustang with a the P-38 lightning coming in at a very close second!

The same purpose but with a jet.....F-14 all the way baby! of course with the obligated top gun OST

For Business purpose..... A Mi-24/35 Hind should do the trick..... weapons on the outside and VIP config on the inside....nothing says more about a hostile takeover than arriving in your own attack helicopter.

To have in my room to look at.... A Spit and of course....the Wooden Wonder, A DeHavilland Mosquito of course in gunship configuration!

For Target practice A Gau-88 avenger cannon with an A-10 around it.

General transport.... gimme a L-100, 2 cars with ya and travel the world!

And just for the purpose of raising hell..... A Caspian Sea Monster would do!

That's my list I guess ;D

Pretty simple for me

777-300 for those long haul, VIP party flights
F-14D for the dont mess with me vibe, and sheer coolness
F4U Corsair for a bit of nostalgia
C-17 to haul around some toys
MH-65 to get around town easily

I've waited and thought this one over for a while now,

and if it's only one I can own, it would have to be a C150.

- Easy to fly,

-Simple & abundant enough to never become a maintainance problem, as I could learn to fix it myself and parts will be around forever.

-Good on fuel.

- Small enough to land just about anywhere, but plenty of room to bring some friends.

Maybe if you strap them to the wings or something...but I think you'd be better off with at least a 172 for that situation unless you patiently bring them one at a time to your destination.  ;D

I'm going to assume that the original question meant ONE airplane.. not one for every situation  :D

And like the age-old question.. "If you could have any car, what would it be?"  ...  my first instinct is for some sort of vintage, Italian exotic sports car.. but  NOT if it was the car I had to drive every day  :P

My needs would be:

-Simple to operate and fly (not needing a ground-crew or co-pilot)

-Reasonably fast (traveling by air at speeds barely twice as fast as driving gets old fast)

-Multi-engine redundancy (for occasional instrument flight, and legs over large bodies of water)

-Able to get in/out of all but the tiniest, grass strips, but still carry a few friends

That pretty much narrows it down to a "Twotter"   8-)

And I really don't even like them..  :P

If money was not an issue I`d have to go for a Concord as well, if only just for its stunning looks.  I could just stand there and look at it all day, but if i did get bored I could take all my family and freinds with me on top speed tours. Would have to get someone else to fly it of course, dont think I`d get my fat arse in its tiny cockpit.

Failing that, it would have to be a Mig29 OVT for its stunning power and manouverability, unless that would meen having to learn russian...

Sukoi 31 for the weekends maybe.

Realisticly though, if I had to consider the costs... I might just about be able to afford to run a microlight.

The lack of imagination in this thread surprises me. The question implies that you have unlimited funds. This means that you could afford to own & operate any aircraft you fancy regardless of cost. The world is your proverbial lobster.

If this were possible do you mean to tell me that you would still choose a little Cessna trainer? Not sure I believe that. :-/ :P

When I first got FS9, I found and flew everything that went fast and high. Never once did I touch the props. I hated them, couldn't see the purpose.

After a few years of that, I joined SimV, and was introduced to 'bush' flying.  I've not turned back since.

In fact, my tastes have gone earlier and earlier as I go, and choice 2 after that C150 would without a doubt be a Fokker DVII.  8-)

Third choice is the Su-47. :P :D

It's hard to imagine having unlimited funds, yet being restricted to only one aircraft...  but I guess if that were the case, it'd have to be a XC-47 (Gooney on amphibious floats), probably with the largest turbine engines possible (to enhance reliability and minimize down time... old radials can be very cranky).
Something smaller would be fun, but I couldn't take as many friends along, or cross oceans with anything smaller.  ;D But such an airplane could get in and out of some pretty small, rough airfrields... not to mention thousands of bodies of water worldwide. ;)
Finding a co-pilot would not be a problem... any multi-rated pilots here who would not want a free type rating and many opportunities to log C-547 time for free? I didn't think so.  ;) Assuming I'm rich, I could warehouse co-pilots in free housing on my vast estate.  ;D

And it'd have excellent audio and O2 systems for all seats...projector and screen for in-flight movies... and proper cabin heat... and a working galley and bar... hmmm,  I suddenly want to go buy a lottery ticket.  ;D

I kinda dismissed water-ops with my Twotter choice... and the more I think about it, the more I'd like that option... might as well go BIGGER, too  :D Even though unlimited funds would make it easy to have a warehouse full of radial engine.. the turbine retro-fit is more practical.

As appealing as a Gooney on floats might be.. for actual water-ops.. I'm changing  to a turbine Albatross  8-)

I doubt there is an amphibious plane capable of crossing oceans. The best range of any amphibian I know of, and it is currently in production, is Shin-Meiwa US-2, range 4600 km, 4 turboprops, cruise speed 470 km/h.

Still too short for ocean crossings.

If pure seaplanes are an option, then it is hard to match the range and comfort of Saunders-Roe Princess - 9250 km range, at cruise speed of 580 km/h.

How demanding is the Princess regarding the length and smoothness of runways?

I'd have the best decked-out 727 anyone has ever seen.

Starting with a thourogh D-check, HUD, new radios, new individual glass instruments (that still look like steam) new electric IPECO seats, the latest WX/Terrain radar, long-range tanks, HUSH kit installed, -217 engines, the best interior anyone has ever seen in a narrow-bodied jet, wet bar with seating, separate staterooms, etc. Leather and oak everywhere with crystal and china on the tables. The best beer and wine from all over the world, and a FO & FE and cabin crew on-call 24/7.

But it still would not have A/T nor FMS aboard.  ;D

Oh man, this will be tough. I have 5 I will choose.

Falcon 2000 ex EASY - I am around these thing, very luxurious and very agile for a corporate jet. Amazing plane by Dassult.

F4D Phantom - Have always loved the style of these things, very fast (said to be too fast for what it is used for) and they are a huge part of history.

SU - 27 Flanker - Probably my favorite plane. I think this is a beast, the looks, the speed, the agility. Amazing aircraft. There is one for sale too actually, the only one in the US, you can find it at controller.com for 4.9 million USD. Very, very nice plane.

F - 14 Tomcat - Swept wings, fast, widely used. Like the others, I have always loved these.

Corsair - Old WWII. The British Beast I say, very nice looking plane, I think better looking than the P - 51.

I think I'd be a little timid about a Skymaster, until they figure out why that one crashed a few weeks ago.  A large section of wing came off during a low approach, and I would venture to guess an AD will be released eventually, similar to the ones for wing spars on T-6s and T-34s.

There has already been a warning published.

That is a little different than the "skyrocket" version posted above. No wingtip tank involved. They also [claim to] modify/replace any exterior parts needed as part of the overhaul upgrade.

If i were going with the single engine, I kinda have to agree with this one.
STOL, but with some hauling ability to take some people or stuff.
Neat design. Not to big (like a Caravan) or too small (like the 206/210). Just the right size for me.
Good engine too.

If I were going  twin, I would say the new Viking Twotters.

If I were gonna stick with piston though, which is where I will more likely end up, I would like the Maule, with the see through doors, and the sunroof (By the way, I think a sunroof on a high wing plane is a no-brainer. The high vs low wing arguement always comes down to visibility. A highwing with a sunroof offers so much more in that arena.)

Now I know I said in a previous reply that it would have to be a P51, but I have been giving this some more thought. If one takes into account the basic title, then it would have to involve a life full of a lot, not really a huge amount of money. Now not counting the lottery, you would either have to be making it for yourself, of be working for someone who pays well, no very well, no exceedingly very well. Now this is all well and good, but it will involve a lot, maybe a huge amount of work. So this brings in the spare time factor. Would you have any after other commitments. Probably not. So I have come up with the best answer. I will change my mind if allowed and choose another aircraft.
Now taking into account the above, add in hussle and bustle of life, stress, lack of time, money etc, etc I will go for nice looking light weight or even an ultralight. I think being low and slow is a good way to unwind from the daily grind. It would have to be an enclosed cockpit and that cockpit is designed to look like a P51. It would however be modified with top sound system and a rumble seat. I am not looking to be flying along to Britney's greatest hits or chilling to Fleetwood Mac's Albatros, no,no, no. It would only play the sounds of a P51. From the moment I turned the key to the moment I turned her off, it would be like sitting in a P51. Also it would have external speakers so that as I bimbled over head I could frighten the locals with the Sound of Music Merlin. Consider it the aviation version of a kit car. The guy next door has a Ferrari Enzo, well it looks like an Enzo, sounds like an Enzo and from a distance could even pass an Enzo, but at the end on the day it is a Ford Escort with a body kit. And why?, because if we had the money to own one, we would be too busy earning more of it to enjoy our acquisition.

A different perspective to the question :)

Matt

Great choice! But, as someone with personal experience in that plane, it does cut down on the utility of the 185. It's slower, can't carry as much, and is much more complex mechanically. In fact, we are getting the floats off of ours as soon as we can find someone to buy them.

My (fantasy) picks:

A Beech 18 Amphi for the lakehouse.

A P-51, Allison powered, for jaunts to the grocery store.

AND, a B-17!!!  For everything else. :D

......now if only I could come up with a non-defective lottery ticket......   ::)

Why would you want to spoil a truly classic aircraft, one of the finest ever built and put an Allison engine in it. When you have the best, install the best, a Merlin 8-) The Allison ran out of legs at altitude due to only having a single stage supercharger

I would love to have a P-51D, but I would like a C-150 or a C-152 for regular flying.  8-)

I would have to go with a classic on this one. An Aeronca 7AC Champion. Why a Champ and not a Cub or a Husky or any number of similar airplanes? I have no idea, I just love the Champ. ;)

I spotted one, humming (as they do), over my back garden yesterday, in brilliant sunshine, and a tail wind...
A very respectable rate of knots, and obviously having lots of fun, at a reasonable cost!

Fun flying for the financially impoverished!.... [smiley=thumbsup.gif]...!

The XB-70. Nothing like crusing at 70,000ft at mach 3 in such a huge plane.

C-17 for short feilds
SU-34 for those long flights where you will need a washroom and a kitchen while still able to travel mach 2 (making grilled cheese sandwiches while co-pilot is doing barrel rolls FTW)
and a a-1 skyraider for a radial

My sights are high but a modernized version of the De Havilland Comet 4 with turbofans instead of turbojets and a modern flight deck.

I guess I have a thing for the Allison 501-D13. I would chose either a Lockheed Electra L188 or a Convair CV-580. I also wouldn't mind having a F4-U Corsair. ;D

The modernized Nimrods do have stretched wings and turbofans. Now that Ukogbani Air Force no longer wants their brand new frames, would you like to install VIP interiors in them?

I would love to have a Howard 500. My grandfather used to have one (he sold it before I was born), and I've loved it since I flew the Milton Shupe one for FS2004.

I used to fuel the Howard 500 (N500HP) at Anoka County Airport while in high school (1997-2001).  It took ungodly amounts of 100LL.  I believe it's still on field although I haven't seen it for a while.

Lancair Legacy or similar type. I would want something fast, 2 seat, retracts, and be clean aerodynamic wise.

I love the 1940s classics, the Ercoupe of which I canno't find a decent operating one for FSX.  Additionally, the Globe or Temco Swift, of which I am a proud owner, albeit a money pit, bought it on the cheap and will spend tens of thousands putting it back into the air.  If I can keep away from women and the occasional drink or three, don't eat and become incredibly wealthy, well then I should be done by 2020 .

Bought a "bargain" classic, eh?
Normally, that's not a very good idea... but it's a Swift, so you're excused.  ;D

BTW, there's a fantastic Ercoupe available for X-Plane; might actually induce me to buy that program.

Personally... if I REALLY had the money and could afford it...

One of each the fighters from WWII, both allies and axis... beside the ME190 that I never liked (don't ask me why, don't know it myself, I simply can't make myself like it). :D

...and the F86 Sabre and the Mig 15 (the last pure dogfighters) too. ;)

If I really had to choose though... with a heavy heart because of all the beauties I had to leave behind, I guess it'd be the P51 Mustang (even a modern 1:1 replica would be fine). :)

Battlestar Galactica.

I'm not sure if it really counts as an aircraft though. I suppose it can go through the air?

Douglas A-1H Skyraider.  My grandfather used to fly it as a naval aviator.
If I couldn't have that, I'd probably want something big like a 747-400.  I've been flying those things WAY too much in FS.  So much, that I even have an easier time landing and flying those beheamoths in some of the toughest places and conditions than I do in even a Cessna C172SP Skyhawk! :D

If i couldn't have that, i'd probably go with a Grumman F-14 Tomcat.  I'm just addicted to those in FS.

I'd probably want a Pristine Lockheed Constellation 4 Engine Radial Propliner and a Huge Hanger with Air-Conditioning and Heat too,, so I can Park that Sucker in there and while I'm at it , I'd also like a huge supply of MONEY ( CASH) to Insure it and Afford the Fuel, because I'd be flying it all the time, gotta love the sounds of those Big Ol' Radial Engines ! My 1st Trip would be from like Miami to Hawaii and back to who knows where ?? the Jetranger

You may want to reconsider........The Superjet has just been grounded with flight control, gear and brake problems. It has been reported that this may kill off production......
